**Total Remuneration Package: $223,417 - $247,520 p.a.**
**About the opportunity**
The RFS is a global leader in fire and emergency services. This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced legal professional to lead as **Director, Office of the General Counsel**. This pivotal role provides expert legal leadership, strategic advice, and compliance oversight to support the organisation’s objectives and alignment with government regulations. As the Chief Audit Executive, you will play a key role in ensuring legal and organisational integrity while mitigating risks.

In this role, you will provide high-level legal advice to the Commissioner and senior leadership, oversee regulatory compliance, and manage litigation to safeguard the organisation’s interests. You will lead the development of legal policies and frameworks, ensure efficient responses to external inquiries, and uphold privacy responsibilities. Additionally, you will foster collaboration with stakeholders, drive continuous improvement in legal practices, and promote a culture of accountability, safety, and high performance.
This is a unique opportunity to combine strategic legal expertise with organisational leadership, making a significant impact on the operations and governance of the RFS.
We are seeking a seasoned legal professional with extensive experience in senior legal roles, preferably within government or large organisations. You possess a sound understanding of legislative functions, particularly the _Rural Fires Act 1997_, and have a proven track record in providing expert legal advice and strategic counsel on complex matters.
As a skilled leader, you have successfully managed legal teams and operations, driving compliance, mitigating risks, and ensuring alignment with organisational and government priorities. Your expertise spans litigation management, regulatory compliance, policy development, and overseeing responses to external inquiries, privacy obligations, and legislative requirements.
You are a collaborative communicator, adept at building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to achieve efficient and effective outcomes and your genuine appreciation for volunteer-based community services, combined with your legal and strategic expertise, positions you as a transformational leader capable of advancing the RFS’s mission and objectives.
**To be eligible for consideration for this role you must have**:
- Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD) from a recognised institution.
- Admission as a solicitor or barrister in an Australian jurisdiction.
- A current Practising Certificate issued by the relevant Legal Profession Admission Board.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- During periods of major fire activity, the incumbent may be required to support operational management activities consistent with their skills and background.
