**Technical Officer - Dive Fisheries**

**About the opportunity**
This position sits within the Dive Fisheries research team. The team’s primary objective is to provide robust scientific advice to government for the sustainable management of Tasmania’s Abalone and Commercial Dive Fisheries. We are seeking a solution focused, output driven and team-oriented applicant to provide technical assistance across a variety of dive-based fishery and ecological scientific research projects.

The Technical Officer (TO) will be required to provide technical support for the team, supervise and partake in extensive diving operations, ensure compliance with WH&S requirements, and liaise with the IMAS operations team to ensure timely and effective delivery of project activities to assist in meeting project timelines. Together with the Senior Technical Officer (STO) and TOs within the team, the role will deliver field research requirements including in situ data collection, analysis and reporting. A significant component of the position will involve participating in the statewide Abalone Timed Swims dive survey, providing high quality fisheries independent data, an integral component of managing the fishery sustainably. The dive modes utilised by the team include High Pressure Surface Supply, SCUBA and Rebreather operations.

**What you’ll do**:

- Effective planning and management of field trips: In consultation/collaboration with the Principle Investigators (PIs) and the STO plan, prepare and conduct diving focused marine research, providing considered advice on site suitability, equipment and personnel needs in order to deliver on the desired outcomes of field trips, including being responsible for:
- liaising with principal investigators and external parties regarding permits, biosecurity protocols
- Safe and Effective field trips:
Provide advice and support to the Principal Investigators and the STO on field trips to ensure:
- the safety and wellbeing issues associated with the field trip are identified, risk assessments completed and appropriate management plans in place.
- Operation and maintenance of field equipment:

- Provide advice on repairs, replacement or new equipment requirements to ensure field equipment is safe and delivers the technical solutions required to undertake research;
- Effective field sampling: In consultation with the PI’s and the STO:
- conduct field sampling - including dive surveys, underwater sample collection and deployment of sampling equipment;
- contribute to the development of techniques and sampling strategies as required.
- Safe and effective Laboratory work:

- Provide advice on the most appropriate laboratory activities to support research into health and condition of exploited marine species, including identification of solutions to research problems.
- Project Support:

- Provide support for the collection, preparation, entry and management of project data, including basic statistical analysis;
- Provide input into the preparation and publication of technical reports and scientific literature;
- Ensure ongoing awareness of political sensitivities of research activities;
- the general public and judgement of when and to whom to divert queries. Participate in community engagement events run by IMAS.

**What we’re looking for**:

- A degree in a relevant field, for example marine science, environmental science.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to work in a team environment.
- Ability to be adaptable and flexible in an environment of change and competing priorities.
- Practical experience and knowledge in fisheries research, plus skilled vessel handling to conduct these activities.
- Demonstrated ability in the use of computer programs (word-processing, spreadsheets, field management systems), including simple statistical summaries/ analyses.
- Demonstrated ability to work with mínimal supervision, using initiative and sound judgment
- Sound interpersonal skills including written and oral communication.
- Current Australian drivers licence with Light Rigid Truck or greater.
- Commercial Vessel License Coxswain Grade 1, or higher.
- Occupational Diving Certificate (AS 2815.1 (SCUBA)), or higher.
- Experienced working in ‘live boating’ diving operations, in particular surface supply diving in exposed coastal areas.
- The ability to work away on field trips or at sea for extended periods regularly.

**Salary details**

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $102,190 comprising base salary within the range of $78,210 to $87,342 plus 17% superannuation.
