**About the opportunity**

Join the dynamic team at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) as a Workshop and Maintenance Technical Officer, where you’ll play a crucial role in supporting cutting-edge research and teaching. This part-time position offers the perfect blend of hands-on work and meaningful contribution to science. You’ll be responsible for ensuring that IMAS assets, including vehicles, vessels (in commercial survey), trailers, and plant equipment, are serviced, maintained, safe, and compliant. Your proactive approach and positive attitude will help facilitate the exciting science and teaching activities at IMAS, making every day engaging and varied.

In this role, you’ll assist in managing the IMAS Taroona workshop, ensuring a safe and tidy environment, and maintaining equipment in top condition. You’ll plan and perform basic maintenance on vehicles, trailers, vessels, and plant equipment, and respond to equipment breakdowns in the field. Additionally, you’ll induct staff and students into the workshop, ensuring high safety standards and compliance. **What you’ll do**:

- Assist with managing the IMAS Taroona workshop and assets, ensuring safety and maintenance.
- Plan servicing and perform basic maintenance on vehicles, trailers, vessels, and equipment.
- Conduct repairs on trailers, outboard engines, and vessels if qualified.
- Address equipment breakdowns in the field, providing advice or facilitating repairs.
- Induct staff and students on workshop safety and equipment use.
- Assist with inspections, clean-ups, asset audits, and other tasks.
- Support the workshop team, liaise with Operations staff, and take on roles such as Fire Warden and First Aider.

**What we’re looking for**:

- Experience in a workshop environment, maintaining tidiness and compliance, with regular servicing of assets.
- Proven mechanical troubleshooting skills (e.g., outboard engines, trailer brakes, 12v electrical systems).
- Ability to work professionally and amicably with diverse groups, supervising and managing staff and students effectively.
- Knowledge of health and safety practices, with the ability to promote positive changes.

**Salary details**

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $102,190 comprising base salary within the range of $78,210 to $87,342 plus 17% superannuation (based on 1.0FTE).
