About us
The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) delivers a justice and community safety system that works to build a safer, fairer and stronger Victoria.
The Assurance directorate manages corporate policies for the department and its Ministers to ensure strong governance and service delivery. It is responsible for risk management, crisis and continuity management, internal and external audit, freedom of information (FOI), information privacy and information security. The FOI Unit ensures the department is compliant with its obligations pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
About the role
The Business Support and Freedom of Information Officer role involves all aspects of processing and assessing FOI requests received by the department and will, under direction, help manage and coordinate FOI workflows. The role is also responsible for providing administrative support to the FOI Unit and assisting with some project work. The Business Support and Freedom of Information Officer may work across the FOI Unit and other business units (including Corrections and Justice Services), to ensure FOI applicants are provided with a timely outcome to their requests.
The key accountabilities of the role may include, but are not limited to:
- Consult within the team and with manager(s) to respond to FOI requests received by the department and process FOI requests in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 1982
- Act as a delegate of the Secretary in making decisions on FOI requests
- Support the review and maintenance of relevant templates and tools for use by the FOI team and maintain relevant records in the department's record management system (TRIM)
- Provide advice, support and guidance to the FOI Unit regarding the effective use of information management systems to ensure that integrity and reliability is maintained
- Develop, implement, and maintain efficient administration systems and processes
- Provide any other administrative support to assist in meeting the FOI unit's objectives, service delivery standards and timelines
- Establish relationships and liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders across the department and the community
- Identify and communicate risks and issues to managers as they arise and work collaboratively to mitigate or resolve them respectively
- Under direction, assist in monitoring and meeting critical deadlines
- Contribute to project work as required.
About you
Applicants with a relevant tertiary qualification in law, public administration or a similar field will be highly regarded.
Crucially, we are looking for an individual who can demonstrate at interview a combination of attributes including:
- Strong written and verbal skills, with a high level of attention to detail
- Initiative and accountability
- The ability to successfully collaborate with and influence stakeholders on a range of issues
- Strategic thinking and strong problem-solving skills.

At interview stage and prior to commencement of employment with the department, you will need to provide evidence that you are vaccinated against COVID-19 with three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine.
Upon commencement of employment with the department you will be required to provide evidence that you have an up-to-date vaccination status within the timelines specified by the department into the DJCS Service Portal. This includes evidence of three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine required by the department (from time to time).
**Acceptable evidence includes**:
- COVID-19 digital certificate or ATAGI exemption certificate (available via your myGov account)
- Your immunisation history statement (available via your myGov account)
Other documentation outside the above will not be accepted as evidence of having received your COVID-19 vaccine doses.
