The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to recruit up to three **Assistant Directors (EL1)** in the Health & Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics (HATSIS) Branch.
These are ongoing, full-time or part-time positions (minimum of four days per week) at the Executive Level 1 classification level. Flexible working arrangements (including a hybrid model of working from home and the office) apply.
**About the area**
The Health & Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics Branch is responsible for developing and delivering the ABS’s health, mental health, ageing, carers, disability and vital statistics work program, and related data integration projects. It also has a leadership and coordination role for national statistical activity about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through the Centre of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Statistics (CoATSIS). The Branch produces outputs using survey and administrative data, as well as from integrated data sources. We produce high-quality health and disability statistics to inform key policy and program initiatives.
**About the roles**
Each of the three vacant roles has a specific area of responsibility:
- managing the stakeholder engagement, development and dissemination of ABS population-based health surveys and data integration projects
- managing the stakeholder engagement, development, and dissemination of ABS household surveys of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and providing advice and guidance on the use of data pertaining to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
- managing a program of work for disability, ageing and carers statistics, including dissemination of the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers as well as progressing the National Disability Data Asset (NDDA). The NDDA is co-governed by people with disability and will bring together de-identified data from Australian, state and territory government agencies for disability research and policy analysis.
Responsibilities of the roles include:
- manage and lead teams to compile, publish, disseminate, and promote ABS health statistical products
- strategically engage with stakeholders on health and disability data and statistical priorities
- manage data governance processes
- work with other areas of the ABS and external partners to develop statistical solutions, provide statistical leadership, and improve the public sector data system
- support a Director in progressing organisational and whole-of-government initiatives as required

**What we are looking for (selection criteria)**
To be suitable you should have most or all the following skills, qualities, and experience:
- experience in team leadership and the ability to manage relationships so that staff are motivated, productive, and engaged
- ability to develop and set clear objectives for a team to see projects through to successful completion
- experience in contributing to large-scale surveys and/or data integration projects
- ability to manage and respond to risks, to manage change, and to work flexibly based on changing priorities
- ability to proactively engage, communicate, influence, and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, and to work in cross-agency initiatives
- experience working with health and/or disability data and concepts.
