The role of the Life and Living skills worker is to work with young people to identify barriers to independence and support the development of practical life skills to successfully transition to independent living in the community.

Youth & Family Services (YFS) is committed to working in partnership with young people to address the issues contributing to their unique experience of crisis & homelessness, with a particular focus on assisting young people to:

- develop life and living skills to prepare for independence
- address issues in relation to health & wellbeing
- promote opportunities to overcome exclusion and isolation
- explore education pathways and participation
- work towards long term sustainable housing

Youth & Family Outreach Program (YFOP) - supporting young people to live independently in the community, with a particular focus towards supporting young women and accompanying children.

Upton Rd & Tranmere St Youth refuges - supporting young people experiencing significant crisis and homelessness in supportive & therapeutic environments at St Kilda and Fitzroy locations.

Youth Private Rental Access Program (YPRAP) - assists young people prepare for and actively engage with private rental and share rental market, through a combination of support, education and financial brokerage.

Refuge Transitions Program - provides a continuum of support for young people leaving the youth refuge to ensure that independent living options are successfully maintained in the community.

YFS staff work within a trauma & psychologically informed practice environment, all staff are expected to work creatively towards ensuring that the support needs of all young people are the first priority.

The role you could play

The Life and Living skills worker is to work with young people to identify barriers to independence and support the development of practical life skills to successfully transition to independent living in the community.

You will successfully
- Complete comprehensive assessments of a young person’s life and living skills.
- Use the assessment to develop an individual Life and Living Skills plan in collaboration with clients. Include a range of interventions, including (but not limited to) health, nutrition & fitness, personal hygiene & physical wellbeing, budgeting & finances, cleaning and maintaining living spaces, positive parenting and positive respectful relationships.
- Assist residents in the development of living skills both in individual and group work environments.
- Work to the direction of the Client Services Coordinator and After Hours Coordinator on the development, implementation and review of Life and Living Skills case plans.
- A strong commitment to working with in a trauma and psychologically informed environment.
- Work between Upton Road and outreach programs in the development of a consistent life and living skills program
- Ensuring the emergency bed is clean and ready for the next evening

This is a permanent part time position, 30 hours per week. You will provide support to residents residing at Upton Rd Youth Services youth refuge and associated outreach clients including Somerset & College Square Foyer Properties, PCYC Rooming House, as directed by the Client Services Coordinator.

Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Award/General Retail Industry Award Level 5.
