**About the Role**
As the Curator, you will work with a team of curators and strategic collection specialists overseeing the University’s Rare East Asian Collection. Your expertise will provide valuable advice to staff, students, and researchers, enriching the curriculum and enhancing object-based learning programs.
Be the driving force behind promoting and sharing this cultural treasure with an engaging and innovative approach. Your efforts will contribute to a multifaceted program that connects people to this fascinating heritage, inspiring curiosity and awe for generations to come.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Collaborating with ASC collection management coordinators to oversee and support physical access, distribution, safe storage, handling, movement, and loans of Rare East Asian Collection materials, adhering to cultural heritage care standards.
- Maxmising the visibility of Archives and Special Collections through contribution to a multifaceted program of access and interpretation.
- Undertaking research into Rare East Asian Collection materials by working collaboratively to develop strategic opportunities to enrich the collection.
**Who we are looking for**
We are seeking a curator with expertise in East Asian history and cultural production, especially in Chinese and Japanese publishing, print media, and rare books. You'll have experience in developing cultural collections, assessing significance and curatorial potential, and using collection management software. You will additionally, be familiar with catalog maintenance, condition reporting, and strategic collection management.
You will also have:
- Postgraduate qualifications in Museum or Curatorial Studies, Librarianship, or relevant experience with cultural collections.
- Tertiary qualification in East Asian Studies, languages, and/or demonstrated knowledge of East Asian cultures, particularly Chinese and/or Japanese, with experience in cultural collection development.
- Fluency in spoken and written Chinese and/or Japanese.
- Demonstrated curatorial skills and experience in developing and delivering exhibitions, access programs, and interpretive materials for diverse audiences, including academic students.
- Demonstrated material handling skills for cultural collections, and knowledge of museum or cultural heritage practices.

Archives and Special Collections (ASC) develops, provides care for, and facilitates access to the University of Melbourne Archives, Rare Books, Prints, Rare Music, Maps, and East Asian collections. The department is led by the Associate Director, Archives and Special Collections, and University Archivist. The department sits within Research and Collection Stewardship, a sub-portfolio of Scholarly Services led by the Director and University Librarian.
