Adelaide
- Job closes 18/2/24
**About the Department**:
The Department of Industry, Science and Resources and our broader portfolio are integral to the Australian Government’s economic agenda. Our purpose is to help the government build a better future for all Australians through enabling a productive, resilient and sustainable economy, enriched by science and technology. We do this by:
- Growing innovative & competitive businesses, industries and regions
- Investing in science and technology
- Strengthening the resources sector.
**About the team**:
The Australian Radioactive Waste Agency (ARWA) is leading the responsible management and safe storage and disposal of Australia’s radioactive waste. A key element of ARWA’s program is the delivery of disposal pathways for Australia’s radioactive waste which will provide purpose-built, highly engineered solutions to manage radioactive waste from sources such as nuclear medicine production.
At ARWA, our dynamic, multidisciplinary team has a unique opportunity to drive the future of Australia’s expertise in safe and secure radioactive waste management, to protect people and the environment for generations to come. Our people come from diverse backgrounds, nationalities, and cultures. These differences bring challenges and opportunities, and they will ultimately enhance the delivery of our complex technical work. Our people have the experience and skills to put ARWA at the forefront of the global nuclear waste management field as we deliver world class facilities for Australia.
**Nuclear Literacy**
Radioactive waste exists in many locations around the country, including hospitals, science facilities and universities. While these locations maintain safety measures, they were not specifically designed for long-term waste management, making their continued use unsustainable. Therefore, the construction and operation of a dedicated facility is needed. The Facility will safeguard the future of Australia's nuclear medicine industry and nuclear research capabilities. ARWA will continue foster a culture of safety and security by demonstrating international best practice and work to increase nuclear literacy in Australia through education and awareness.
**The opportunity**:
To successfully develop and deliver a National Radioactive Waste Management Program, the Australian Government needs to build and maintain its social license, enhance positive sentiment about the program and ARWA, support social cohesion, and seek general acceptance and approval from the Australian community.
ARWA is seeking people with a relevant field of expertise and skillset including (but not limited to) environmental science, communication, and/or social science, who will contribute to the development and implementation of social license strategies and programs to enhance ARWA’s social license standing within the Australian community.
The roles may range from internal advocacy to specialist in nature, depending on the area of work and expertise. The incumbent will be required to work across teams within ARWA to enhance cohesion and collaboration. To perform in these roles, you may be required to:
- Work across the Agency to build capability to uplift the internal understand of social license opportunities and priorities.
- Establish and develop frameworks, guidelines and related governance structures by engaging with key stakeholders to identify and enhance building of social license opportunities.
- Develop and implement clear processes to measure, report and communicate social license programs and outcomes.
- Develop plans, prepare briefs, minutes, proposals, and presentations, as well as conducting research and make informed recommendations.
- Engage with national and international industry networks and stakeholders, local communities and First Nations groups and APS Departments.
- Lead and/or collaborate with technical and non-technical teams within ARWA and various contractors and consultants.
**What’s in it for you?**:
- Demonstrated understanding of social impact and license program management, including principles of social license, community empowerment, and transparent communication strategies.
- Significant relevant experience in managing complex projects within a highly regulated industry/environment.
- Strong project management skills, including the ability to develop and execute strategic plans for stakeholder engagement and trust-building.
- Well-developed written and verbal communication skills, in particular the demonstrated ability to provide sound advice and prepare written reports and briefings.
- Demonstrated ability to influence stakeholders, collaborate and build trusted relationships.
- Demonstrated understanding of the importance of workplace culture that embraces safety and security and is collaborative and inclusive.
- Well-developed interpersonal skills that foster trust and cooperation, and a proven ability to work effectively and with integrity
