Emerging genome-centric technology platforms such as spatial transcriptomics are revolutionising the way we study complex diseases such as cancer. However, they can only tell us so much. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI), more affectionately known as “Spatial Proteomics” is gaining recognition in the study of health and disease as a powerful tool capable of surveying the proteomic complexity of tissues in the spatial dimension in order to unlock insights into physiological and disease mechanisms.
The integration of high-resolution proteomic MALDI-MSI datasets, with other established (i.e. routine histology) and emerging genome-centric technology platforms (i.e. spatial transcriptomics), using multi-layered co-registration approaches will greatly increase the depth of knowledge in functional gene-to-protein expression patterns in both healthy and disease contexts.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are currently seeking a dedicated Research Officer who will be responsible for planning and conducting proteomics experiments within the lab and driving forward the development and implementation of our spatial proteomics pipelines, not only for the lab, but also the wider Cancer Ecosystems program at Garvan.
