The Skeletal Diseases Program (co-led by Profs Mike Rogers and Jacqueline Center) is one of six new strategic research programs at the Garvan Institute. This multi-disciplinary team consists of laboratory-based and clinical researchers working together, with national and international partners, to address major challenges in bone health, with a specific focus on osteoporosis and cancer-associated bone disease.
THE OPPORTUNITY
The Research Officer, Level 1 to 3, will be working in the Clinical Studies and Epidemiology lab in a collaborative framework with other members of the Skeletal Diseases Program. The research will be focused on understanding the consequence of fracture, using large epidemiological and linked datasets. Depending on the level of seniority, the conduct of research will be under guidance from a more senior scientist.
**Salary**: Up to $103,000 + 14% super + salary packaging
Employment Type: 18 months term contract with possibility to extend

WHAT YOU WILL DO
Below responsibilities are dependent on the seniority of the role:
- To make original contributions in research that creatively address questions of science in their field as Skeletal Diseases researcher but under guidance from the Program Leads
- To successfully complete several research projects in an efficient and timely manner and have the outcomes of these projects published under first or joint authorship in journals specific to their specific field
- To gain peer recognition by presentations at national scientific meetings in their field
- To provide general research guidance to more junior research staff whose work might have an impact on wider program research goals
- Co-supervision and mentoring of students and junior research staff
- Provision of supervisory assistance in preparation of research grant proposals, including contribution of data
- Participate in Garvan’s organisation and management, via committee membership involvement in training and mentoring, journal clubs etc.
- Participate in professional activities as a member of scientific societies
- Be involved in the recruitment of research assistants and students
- Successful leadership of research projects resulting in first or senior authorship of published articles in refereed journals, books, conference papers / reports and other research publications
- Contribution to productive research outcomes in team and collaborative projects resulting in mid-authorships on scientific publications
- National and international recognition by invited seminar presentations and oral/poster presentations at national and international meetings
- Role as a named Investigator on research proposal submissions to external funding bodies
ABOUT YOU
The key skills and experience of a Research Officer include:
- PhD or MD in a relevant area - essential
- Extensive experience with data manipulation and analysis of large datasets is expected.
- Expertise in linked data would be highly desirable.
- Statistical and/or epidemiological experience including with programming software such as SAS, R, etc
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills
- Have a strong commitment to continuous delivery of high-quality work, for example demonstrated by a track record of peer reviewed publications.
- Depending on seniority, evidence of leadership and/or mentorship.
- Have excellent communication skills for written reports and oral presentations
- Demonstrate a capacity to work collaboratively with researchers across laboratories
- Ability to work independently while also seeking guidance and direction at appropriate times.
- Be well organised and a good time manager with sound administrative abilities
