Introduction
In just five years, we've grown from around 40,000 members to more than 50,000, with revenue doubling and staff numbers tripling. This growth brings both opportunities and challenges. Now we need your help to ensure our governance structure evolves to match this expansion while maintaining our core commitment to our purpose, to ensure a general practice profession that keeps Australia Health. More than 80% of members that responded to our recent survey, support an initiative to streamline and future-proof our governance structure.
To effectively serve our enlarged membership and respond to rapid changes in healthcare delivery, we need a governance model that is fit-for-purpose. While maintaining strong GP representation remains crucial, our current structure makes it difficult to incorporate other vital perspectives, including patient voices, or respond quickly to emerging healthcare, regulatory and governance trends. We need a more streamlined, contemporary governance model that can support rapid decision-making with the right expertise at the table, ultimately delivering better value to our members and the future of general practice in Australia.
We’ve established a Future Governance Committee to support this work, including reviewing the Constitution and Board governance model, identify options for structural change and engaging members in a co-design process.
The Committee is made up of the Board Chair, President, two additional Directors, Chief Executive Officer, Censor-in-Chief and two additional Fellows (non-directors) and one Registrar (non-director). The committee is supported by the Company Secretary and independent specialist advisors.
Meetings
The committee meets monthly, usually online or by any means where everyone can hear and be heard and reports to every RACGP board meeting on its activities.
Remuneration
Non-director Fellow and Registrar Committee members can claim $125 per hour plus GST for preparation and attendance at taskforce meetings. In addition, non-director Fellow and Registrar Committee members will receive registration, travel and accommodation to attend the GP25 conference in Brisbane in November 2025.
Confidentiality
Committee members will receive or have access to confidential, sensitive and personal information. Committee members must safeguard the confidentiality of any information received and must not make any media or other announcements or releases in connection with their work on the Committee.

Expressions of interest
Expressions of interest are sought from non-director RACGP members to join our Future Governance Committee. To ensure we have a diversity of opinions and experience as we embark on a co-design process, we’re seeking three current members of the RACGP to join the committee. We’ll appoint two FRACGPs and one RACGP Registrar, who are not current or past RACGP directors.
Expressions of interest will be assessed against the following criteria:
Experience or interest in organisational governance
Engagement and involvement in general practice networks and communities
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and form strong, trusted relationships
**You will also need**:
Capacity to devote adequate time to the role, including preparation for and participation in all monthly Committee meetings, workshops and member engagement activities. The estimated time commitment is 2-3 hours per month, on average.
