Key responsibilities
**As a Youth Service Officer, you will specifically**:
- Provide daily monitoring, support, and a safe and secure environment for young people in custody, pending their admission to youth detention or their release from the watchhouse to the community. Assess, monitor and support positive behaviour management of young people in custody, including the use of appropriate communication strategies to prevent escalation of negative behaviour. This may involve de-escalation of aggressive and complex behaviour of young people in custody. Provide direct care of young people in custody including coordinating meals, allocating clothing, encouraging appropriate hygiene practices, supporting safety, wellbeing and cultural needs, and facilitating contact with parents/carers. Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team, by providing information to case workers, mental health workers, Queensland Police Service officers and other visiting personnel on matters relevant to the young person's management whilst in custody. Ensure young people are aware of the rules and expectations while in custody, undertake interviews with the young people (including explaining Conditional Bail Programs and court outcomes) as required, and provide logístical and practical advice and support to young people when they are released from the watchhouse. Facilitate programs to young people as required (e.g. therapeutic, educational, and recreational). Maintain accurate records as required, such as recording daily behavioural observations and any reported or observed harm. - Contribute to continuous improvement in Youth Justice procedures by offering suggestions and ideas that positively impact on the supervision and direct care of young people in custody.
