- **Flourish in a career that makes a difference by collaborating & learning from the best**

The Quantum Device Specialist will be employed by UNSW Sydney to work with Silicon Quantum Computing Pty Ltd (SQC), an Australian private company at the forefront of global efforts to build and bring a full-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer to market.

The Quantum Device Specialist supports the development of a large-scale quantum processor as the team works to scale from 10 to 100-qubit architectures by 2028. The Quantum Device Specialist works on optimisation of both device fabrication and measurement of SQC’s spin-based quantum processors.

Included in the role is the ongoing development and operation of cryogenic measurement capabilities for benchmarking these quantum processors. The role also works directly with our atomic-scale device fabrication scientists and device processing engineers to ensure delivery of integrated processors using our globally unique high yield device manufacturing processes.

This position reports to Professor Michelle Simmons and works with a dedicated leadership team at SQC to ensure maximum device throughput and efficient quantum processor operation. This role will also work with other staff and students funded by SQC as well as the Australian Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T or Centre). While this role does not have any direct reports, it is expected that they will assist where necessary with the supervision of other team members.

**About the role**
- Fixed Term - 3 years
- Full-time (35 hours per week)

**Silicon Quantum Computing**

SQC was formed in May 2017 by the Commonwealth of Australia, UNSW Sydney, Telstra Corporation, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and the State of New South Wales. It was funded with A$83 million to acquire a portfolio of world-leading silicon quantum computing intellectual property (IP) developed over the previous twenty years at the Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communications Technology (CQC2T) and to commence a technical development program to build a silicon quantum computer.

Since May 2017, SQC has assembled a world-class team of quantum scientists, engineers and technicians, specialist equipment and globally leading laboratories at UNSW Sydney to further its program. In addition to its core processor technology, SQC is developing the ‘full stack’ to ensure it can deliver a useful and manufacturable quantum device.

**Specific responsibilities for this role include**:

- Develop and perform low noise, high-frequency measurements of spin qubit devices in silicon.
- Work alongside, and with, processing engineers to deliver high quality qubit processors
- Operate a cryogenic dilution refrigerator.
- Operate and maintain specialised electronic equipment (e.g. oscilloscopes, signal generators, vector signal generators, DACs / ADCs, etc.).
- Liaise with Professor Michelle Simmons and her leadership team to ensure efficient delivery of quantum processors based on atom qubits in silicon technology.
- Assist with the maintenance of laboratory computer hardware and software infrastructure.
- Work with a multidisciplinary team of quantum physicists, engineers, technicians, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students to establish optimal setups for performing high-fidelity measurements.
- Develop and optimise the configuration of dilution refrigerators for low-noise, cryogenic operation with RF devices and GHz lines.
- Ensure processing of high-quality devices with RF and GHz control and addressability.
- Responsibility for the ensuring optimal devices are measured
- Where appropriate, take leadership of research projects
- Make a significant contribution to the field of quantum information.
- Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
- Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

**About the successful applicant**
**(Selection Criteria)**

To be successful in this role you will have:

- PhD in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, or relevant field desired, with at significant work experience in a research environment.
- Demonstrated experience of low-noise cryogenic measurement of solid-state quantum devices.
- Demonstrated experience in data taking and analysis using Matlab and in a range of programming languages including a strong proficiency in Python.
- Demonstrated experience of clean-room device process
