The opportunity
CSIRO's Manufacturing Research Unit is seeking a hands-on, detail-driven Research Officer to join our Quantum Device Fabrication Team. This role is ideal for someone with expertise in micro- or nanoscale device fabrication who thrives in a cleanroom environment and enjoys practical, problem-solving work. You'll collaborate with leading scientists and engineers to develop and produce advanced nanoscale electronic devices that power CSIRO's quantum sensing research.
This is a hands-on laboratory role, requiring you to be onsite five days a week.
Your duties will include:
- Fabricate nanoscale and microelectronic devices to project specifications.
- Troubleshoot and refine fabrication processes to improve reliability, reproducibility, and performance.
- Optimise existing protocols and develop new fabrication techniques.
- Maintain accurate, detailed records of all fabrication processes.
- Contribute to technical reports and presentations.
- Work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams to support CSIRO's scientific objectives.
- Respond to challenges constructively and with initiative.
Role particulars & eligibility
- Location: Lindfield, Sydney (Terramerragal and Gammeraigal land).
- Salary: AU$96k – AU$109k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation
- Tenure & work schedule: 3 year specified term. Options for part-time (min 0.8 FTE) can be discussed based on needs of role and individual circumstances.

As the successful candidate, you will bring:
- Relevant trade certificate, diploma, bachelor's degree, or equivalent experience in device packaging, engineering, materials science, or physics
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in micro- and nanostructured thin-film device fabrication in a clean room environment
- Proven expertise in device fabrication techniques such as photolithography, wet/dry etching, wire bonding, and encapsulation
- Experience working to achieve tight technical specifications and deliver work to agreed timelines
- Demonstrated high level of manual dexterity, with proven ability to work in an organised manner and to be details orientated
- Demonstrated experience in maintaining and improving quality control processes
- Experience in equipment maintenance and troubleshooting within cleanroom and laboratory environments, including thin-film deposition and vacuum systems, as well as familiarity with materials and electronic characterisation tools (e.g., Atomic Force Microscopy, I–V measurements) is desirable
