**Nurse Unit Manager - Special Care Nursery**

The Special Care Nursery (SCN) is an eight cot Level three Special Care Nursery, providing care for mildly/moderately unwell newborns born at greater than or equal to thirty-four weeks gestation or newborns with a birthweight of greater than or equal to 2,000 grams. The SCN also accepts transfers from tertiary neonatal units of medically stable preterm babies for ongoing care and support in preparation for discharge from hospital. On average 200 babies are admitted each year. The SCN model of care is underpinned by keeping mothers and babies together to achieve this the SCN works in close partnership with the Sandringham Maternity services.

**Your contribution**

The Nurse Unit Manager - Special Care Nursery Sandringham is responsible for providing clinical leadership and enhancing the safety and effectiveness of clinical practice to the Special Care Nursery Sandringham and works closely with the Services Manager, Head of Unit, medical team and the nurses and midwives.

The Nurse Unit Manager - Special Care Nursery Sandringham is responsible for the day to day operation across the Special Care Nursery, providing central co-ordination of patient flow, including admissions and discharges.The Nurse Unit Manager - Special Care Nursery Sandringham oversees staffing requirements and budget measures for the Special Care Nursery and is the central point of contact for the multidisciplinary team internally and externally for issues relating to Neonatal Services.

The role does provide hands-on care and carries a patient load when required. The role is the key role in providing clinical leadership support to all levels of nursing/midwife staff in the SCN on a shift-to shift basis. The Nurse Unit Manager also provides cover and support to the Services Manager, including covering the Services Manager role, as required.

Your duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

- In collaboration with the Clinical Directors (Medical and Nursing) provide strategic and clinical leadership for all services within the SCN portfolio. Maintain a culture within the SCN which values multidisciplinary collaboration, clinical excellence, Family Centered and developmental care.
- As a senior leader in SCN establish and sustains trusting and respectful relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide leadership for direct reports by developing and coaching them, appraise performance, delegate appropriate tasks and accountabilities, and ensure they receive appropriate, professional training and development opportunities to support them in their role and development.
- Central point of contact for operational queries involving a coordinated response to the Paediatric Infant Perinatal Emergency Retrieval service (PIPER).
- Ensure a seamless pathway for the babies and their family to maintain the model of care principles; maximise continuity of care-giver and minimise movement of the baby with the internal multidisciplinary teams and external partners such as other Special care nurseries and PIPER.
- Ensure systems, processes and practices are developed and implemented within a continuous improvement framework and promote innovation.

**About you**

To be successful within this role you will need to have:

- AHPRA Registration -Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife.
- Post graduate qualifications in Neonatal Nursing (or equivalent).
- Significant and demonstrable clinical experience as a senior Nurse/Midwife in a neonatal/maternity environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of the complexity of working in a public health setting including the Victorian public health sector enterprise agreements and budget processes.
- Strong communication skills; skilled negotiator, critical thinker, conflict resolution competent and an ability to communicate on all levels.
