Purpose of specific work area and position
The Bushfire Resilience and Operational Support Branch sits within the Strategic Capability Division, and leads strategic and operational asset management, bushfire mitigation strategy and land use planning resilience for the Rural Fire Service (RFS). The Bushfire Mitigation function comprises operational and non-operational staff with expertise in mitigation strategy, first nations capability development, environmental ecology (natural and cultural), landscape fire policy, and bushfire investigation.
The Bushfire Investigation team is responsible for the development of the bushfire investigation framework, systems, and processes, and supports the development of bushfire investigation capability across the state.
Reporting to the Executive Manager, Bushfire Mitigation, you will lead and manage the functions of the team and build strong relationships across the bushfire mitigation, landscape fire policy, and training functions, to ensure the design and implementation of the fire investigation and prevention framework enhances regional operations, improves community safety, and drives service delivery.

Highly desirable requirements
- Demonstrated skills, experience, and knowledge in bushfire investigations, and/or a post-graduate qualification.
- Can demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders from rural and remote communities.
Primary duties
In addition to the generic Inspector, Rural Fire Service (RFS) role description, the primary duties of the Manager Bushfire Investigation include but are not limited to:
- Develop the bushfire arson investigation and prevention framework, systems, and processes to ensure suitable staff, volunteer and Brigade capability, alignment with legislative requirements and empower best practice bushfire investigation activities in the Regions.
- Working closely with the Training and Development Unit, lead the development of the bushfire investigation training framework, which may include liaison with registered training providers, curriculum design, material creation, delivery methods, implementation planning and evaluation.
- Coordinate delivery of training to staff on bushfire investigation, utilising train-the-trainer approaches, to ensure capability and capacity within the Regions.
- Provide leadership, training and mentoring to Manager Bushfire Regulatory Compliance in the Regions on bushfire investigation and compliance related matters.
- Maintain contemporary and high-level knowledge of fire investigation, including bushfire science, legislative requirements, and investigative techniques.
- Provide operational expertise, specialist advice and counsel on bushfire investigation, practices, and processes to internal and external stakeholders.

- Rural Officer Two (RFSO2) or applicants with equivalent industry experience, appropriate skills, knowledge, are encouraged to apply.

- Have a proven commitment to maintaining bushfire competencies and operating in a regional team environment.
- Incumbents may be required to travel and work within their area of responsibility and may also be required to undertake intrastate and/or interstate deployment and travel.
- This is a day work position yet may require flexible hours of work to meet functional demands, including working at night on weekends as part of the role.
- Incumbents appointed to this position will participate in a personal professional development programme developed in conjunction with their supervisor.
- Incumbents must have proven commitment to maintaining competencies and operating in a team environment.
- Those appointed to a role within the QDMA (Queensland Disaster Management Arrangements) framework will undertake appropriate regularly training, to maintain your role within RFS as a member of any QDMA appointed position.
