- About You
The Policy & Workplace Relations team plays a pivotal role at the University by providing high-quality workplace relations advice, solutions, and strategies. Our team is committed to delivering policies, processes, and systems that align with and support the University's broader objectives.

Our work encompasses a diverse range of functions, including:
Providing expert advice on workplace relations matters.- Managing complex cases, such as those involving conduct, performance, organizational change, and inherent requirements.- Advocating on behalf of the University in both internal and external settings.- Developing and drafting workplace policies, processes, and contractual documents.- Supporting enterprise bargaining initiatives and negotiations.- Coaching and mentoring stakeholders to build internal capabilities.- Leading strategy and project development in alignment with organizational goals.

As a Principal Advisor, you will deliver expert support across a range of employee relations (ER) issues, proactively managing cases related to conduct, performance, change, and inherent requirements. With a focus on root-cause analysis and big-picture assessment, you will develop tailored resolution strategies in collaboration with managers, executive stakeholders, and People Partners.

To be successful in this position, you’ll have as a minimum:
- Expert working level knowledge of the Fair Work Act 2009 and contract law essential with the ability to become an expert in all RMIT University enterprise agreements and policies.- Demonstrated experience in case management of complex matters and industrial disputes through to resolution.- Demonstrated experience providing complex advice/consultation on a broad range of workplace relations matters including performance management, misconduct, industrial disputes enterprise wide change and terminations in large complex organisations including health related issues.- Provide specialist advice around professional responses to complex notices of dispute, legal issues or complaint submitted by staff, the union or other paid agents which appropriately address the issue in question whilst managing risk to the University.-
- High level ability to effectively negotiate with and influence unions, clients and other executive stakeholders to achieve support and strategic outcomes.- High level ability to research and respond to complex industrial questions with reference to legislation, industrial instruments, contracts, policy and case law.- Ability to analyse and interpret data in order to generate and deliver information in a sensible and appropriate format.- Expert grasp of the fundamentals of procedural fairness/natural justice.- Demonstrated experience in working in a team environment as a senior member and mentor to junior members and supporting the overall achievement of strategic goals.-
- Advocacy of matters at FWC or other external jurisdictions is essential.- Demonstrated experience with enterprise bargaining including negotiating, drafting, implementation, industrial action and strategy development- Experience of developing and drafting policy.- Ability to develop and contribute to employee relations strategy- Demonstrated experience in coaching and mentoring junior team members
