- Australian Antarctic Division
- Kingston, TAS
- Coordinate maintenance planning activities for the built infrastructure and mechanical systems which support Australia's Antarctic Program.
- Work in a multi-disciplined team which thrives on innovation and improvement.
- Based in Kingston in southern Tasmania.
**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:
- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it
- protect the Antarctic environment
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes.
Within the A&T Branch, the Infrastructure Strategy and Planning (ISP) Section fulfils the role of asset owner for the AAD’s research station infrastructure. The section develops maintenance planning, asset management, drawing management, and inventory systems to support maintenance, operation and construction at the AAD’s stations. The section also oversees 3-year and 10-year infrastructure planning and coordinates the AAD’s station master planning. Other functions include managing infrastructure compliance, providing specialist engineering expertise and developing technical specifications for research stations.
Within the A & T Branch, the Mechanical Section is a service-based group providing support to the Australian Antarctic Program through the provision of power generation, mobile plant and operational support at the AAD’s research stations.
**The Job**
We are looking to fill two Maintenance Planning Coordinator roles in the Infrastructure Strategy and Planning Section and the Mechanical Section. There is one position available in each of the sections.
The Maintenance Planning Coordinators will work in a small team which provides maintenance planning for the AAD’s research station infrastructure and mechanical plant and systems. Each coordinator will have a primary responsibility for either infrastructure or mechanical. While there are two distinct maintenance planning streams providing service to separate sections, the two streams work very closely together and form a maintenance planning community of practice. The team is supported by ICT specialists and works closely with head office trade supervisors, engineers and project personnel, and with maintenance staff in Antarctica.
Key duties for the Maintenance Planning Coordinators are:
- coordinating team activities, including supervising team members
- maintaining and updating the asset register within the AAD’s Maximo computerised maintenance management system (CMMS)
- reviewing and updating planned maintenance strategies in terms of task, frequency and risk to optimise use of labour and materials
- developing and delivering training for maintenance staff
- ensuring that maintenance plans meet requirements for statutory compliance and for safe and efficient operation
- assisting in the development of job instructions and safety procedures for planned maintenance tasks
- assisting the head office trade supervisors to plan, schedule and execute annual maintenance plans
- developing recommended spare parts listings and assisting with integration of the CMMS with inventory management
- identifying and championing initiatives to improve maintenance workflows
- exploring opportunities to integrate CMMS with other digital environment systems such as finance, drawings and SCADA.
