**Who we are**
The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australia's Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Government's Antarctic goals. These goals are to:
- maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australia's influence within it,
- protect the Antarctic environment,
- understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system,
- undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.
The Assets and Technology (A&T) Branch provides and maintains the equipment and infrastructure to support the AAP. A&T Branch activities range from the maintenance of existing Antarctic stations and equipment through to the design, manufacture, testing, operation and procurement of advanced scientific equipment and systems. The Branch manages major infrastructure projects in support of AAP outcomes.
The Mechanical Section is a service based group providing support to the Australian Antarctic Program through the provision of power generation, mobile plant and operational support.
**The job**
Key responsibility of the Mechanical Workshop Coordinator is to coordinate and support all activities undertaken in the Kingston Mechanical Workshop.
- Provide “on the floor” guidance and coordination to other trades in the workshop to assist in delivering designated priorities.
- Plan, prioritise and schedule workshop activities to ensure plant and equipment is ready for planned deployment.
- Utilise the computerised maintenance management system - Maximo to plan and record, Mechanical Workshop maintenance and inventory.
- Foster a strong personal and team focus on environmental and safety risk identification, assessment and management across workshop operations.
- Contribute to maintenance management, including failure analysis and work practice development, including supporting investigations into incidents, equipment or maintenance practices.
- Supervise sub-contractors as required.
- Manage parts and inventory including procurement to support Mechanical workshop activities.
- Undertake inspections, repair, modification and servicing and overhaul of plant, equipment and watercraft, including specialised over-snow equipment, refuelling equipment and marine supply equipment (Hagglunds, Lighter Amphibious Resupply Cargo - LARC, etc).
- Develop and maintain positive working relationships and provide a broad range of professional mechanical and technical advice to plant and equipment users and other mechanical staff, including:
- assisting with specialist training for Antarctic expeditioners in both mechanical and operational aspects of the Hagglunds Bv 206 & LARC V on an annual basis.

- Strong knowledge and experience in workshop and plant maintenance safety.
- Capability and experience in workshop task coordination and support for a trades team of varying disciplines.
- Experience and Knowledge as a diesel mechanic with experience across power generation, earth moving plant, oversnow equipment and watercraft.
- Experience with the modification of mobile plant to ensure suitability for specific environments.
- Experience with spare parts and inventory management systems for the support of heavy plant in a remote environment.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
**Mandatory Qualifications**
- The Mechanical Workshop Coordinator must hold a valid, trade or technical certificate (Certificate III or higher) relevant to the role (e.g. Diesel Mechanic).
