**The Role**
As a leader in the HR function, you will provide business leadership, synthesis and integration of HR solutions that support business strategy and associated business plans: including achievement of corporate objectives, compliance with legislative and governance requirements and driving best practice for the Australian Government.
As a natural leader and proven HR professional, you will be comfortable challenging and contributing to management of the wider business, sometimes beyond the HR remit, in order to create a high achieving organisation through its people. In our national team, you will be responsible for supporting employees and managers of APS employees to manage complex HR matters relating to performance, behaviour, health, change and other aspects.
Key activities include:
- Holistic management of complex people cases, integrating HR expertise to get appropriate HR outcomes for employees and managers;
- Building manager capability through the development and implementation of people projects, strategies and initiatives to coach and enable managers to make informed decisions;
- Partnering and stakeholder engagement, being proactive in growing and maintaining strong connections; and
- Provision of advice and strategies for individuals and managers experiencing interpersonal conflict and/or unacceptable behaviour to support resolution.
Within Defence, the role is titled as a HR Team Leader, so you may be responsible for a small team in the future. The majority of the role requires supervision of limited numbers of staff, usually only one direct report.
The role is based at Melbourne with a requirement to travel to other sites in Victoria and Tasmania to meet with stakeholders as required.
**Our Team**
This role is in the HR Services Directorate and collectively we rely on each other’s knowledge and strengths to achieve results. You will support the Assistant Director HR Services VIC/TAS, based at Defence Plaza Melbourne, by ensuring that services are provided across your team’s footprint, staff are engaged, productive, trained, and supported and by providing a high standard of customer service.
The HR Services Directorate is a national team, regularly interacting and working together across the multiple domains both locally and across the country to achieve successful outcomes for Defence as one team.
To be successful in your role as an APS 6 Senior HR Advisor, you will have:
- A passion for, and experience in HR and providing HR Services to personnel and managers who are geographically dispersed;
- Be able to manage a challenging workload across a broad HR portfolio with quality and a high attention to detail;
- Have outstanding customer service skills and be able to demonstrate the ability to build relationships with key stakeholders to ensure the delivery of seamless HR services that continues to meet the changing needs of our customers;
- Have a solutions-focused approach and be able to demonstrate initiative, innovation and agility to ensure the Defence workforce is well positioned to deliver Government priorities;
- Have the ability to deal with HR issues and change in a proactive, positive and dynamic way; and
- Have excellent communication skills whilst responding to a range of HR related enquiries often of a complex nature, working collaboratively with others, presenting at various forums and actively engaging with stakeholders.
