SVHN comprises some of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious hospitals; these include St Vincent’s Hospital and Sacred Heart Hospice. St. Vincents Hospital is a major public hospital and a principal tertiary referral hospital. St Vincents specialises in heart/lung transplantation; bone marrow transplantation; cardiology; neurosurgery, cancer; clinical genomics, HIV medicine; palliative care, respiratory medicine; mental health; and drug and alcohol services, aged psychiatry, homeless health and prisoner health. St Vincent’s Health Australia provides compassionate healthcare to people from all walks of life, but reflecting our mission, we are especially committed to people from vulnerable and marginalised backgrounds.
The Hospital has a long-standing reputation for treating the highest acuity and complex patient loads, attracting referrals on a state-wide and national basis. **What**you'll** be doing**
- The Emergency Trainee is responsible for assessment and management of patient’s presenting to the Emergency Department (ED); communication of assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care; communication with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations; arrangement of patient discharge process and liaison with GP’s and other community care services to ensure the provision of optimal patient care to patients presenting to St. Vincent’s Hospital (SVH).SVH ED is a busy department treating approximately 51,000 patients each year. About 46% are admitted to the Hospital from the ED each day, a figure that represents some 50% of all hospital admissions. The hospital is a trauma centre and has ECMO capabilities. The department is accredited for the maximum ED training time (level TS4).
Work in the Emergency is at times demanding and difficult. Patients come from all levels of society and present a wide spectrum and complexity of both medical and social problems. Because the department is often crowded and busy, staff should be mindful that they need to protect patients’ privacy and confidentiality at all times. Despite these demands, work in our ED can be extremely fulfilling on a personal and a professional level. Our department has a FLEXI Clinic which has proven to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. All services with the exception of Paediatrics and Obstetrics are provided at SVH In the event that paediatric / obstetric patients self-present to St. Vincent’s Emergency, they are stabilised and transferred by ambulance, if required, to the nearest Hospital able to provide those services.
**TERMS**: Emergency AT's undertake a variety of terms at SVH: Emergency, Anaesthetics, ICU, Drug and Alcohol and our PANDA unit (Psychiatric and Non-prescription Drug and Alcohol). There is also an opportunity to do a Special Skills term in Simulation and a Special Interest term in ultrasound, working towards CCPU modules.
