The Unaccredited Orthopaedic Surgery Trainee is responsible for assessment and management of patients with a problem requiring specialised Orthopaedic surgery treatment at St. Vincent’s Hospital. This will be under the supervision of the Consultant responsible for the care of such patients. The Trainee will be responsible for the communication of assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care; communication with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans; maintenance of accurate and relevant patient documentation; coordination of diagnostic tests and consultations; performing of any necessary operative procedures required for the care and treatment of such patients and arrangement of patient admission and discharge procedures. The Trainee will attend Outpatient Clinics of the Department and also participate in the roster of operative assisting in private hospitals where consultants of the unit work.

**What**you'll** be doing**
- The Orthopaedic Unaccredited trainee will gain experience in general orthopaedics, trauma and advanced joint replacement. The position involves employment at St. Vincent’s Campus, including working across St. Vincent’s Public and Private Hospitals. The Unaccredited Orthopaedic Trainee will work under the Visiting Medical Officers, in association with 2 accredited AOA Trainees. They will provide support to the Emergency Department and will participate both in the on call and overtime roster as required. The successful applicant usually has some orthopaedic experience at a junior level and is in a surgical stream, waiting to obtain a position on to the accredited orthopaedic training program. Possession of the Primary Examination FRACS is desirable, but not essential.
Major challenges for the Unaccredited Orthopaedic Trainee include:
- Balancing mandated training and education requirements with service provision, within the limitations of a busy health network.
- Maintaining a professional role and responsibility for patient care, in close liaison with supervising consultants.
- Working collaboratively with other staff in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Maximising the efficient utilisation of the physical resources of the Local Health Network.
- Responsibility for supervision and teaching of more junior medical staff attached to the department.
- Balancing of the operative surgical load and clinical research
- Attending conferences and training sessions
- Attending in hospital weekly training session.
- Close and effective liaison with consultants will allow the Unaccredited Orthopaedic Trainee to demonstrate their level of ability and understanding of patient care and enable them to expand their areas of responsibility.
- To ensure appropriate input from key decision makers and achieve consensus when possible.
- To appropriately allocate teaching time according to evidence of learning need.
- To deal with matters in a confidential manner.
