The postdoctoral researcher for **‘VideoQA on Sitcoms: extending NMN multi-hop processing to handle common-sense reasoning using common-sense knowledge bases’ **will be supervised by Dr Ehsan Abbasnejad and will also involve researchers of Monash University. The role will contribute to the centre’s objective to build world-class research capability in machine learning (ML) while demonstrating the potential and impact of this knowledge for industries in Australia.

This postdoctoral role will investigate how the common-sense and neuro-symbolic approaches inspired by the advances in natural language processing and computer vision can improve VideoQA. Specifically, the project team will build a reasoning system for videos based on neural module networks (NMNs), as these provide explainable multi-hop reasoning capabilities. The project will also design “social robots” which can behave intelligently in socially and culturally complex environments.

This work on sitcoms aims to enhance VideoQA by (i) handling complex questions requiring multi-hop reasoning, and (ii) handling the complexity of socially and culturally contexts. This will contribute to the next generation of algorithms for vision and language tasks by improving the reasoning process.

**This exciting role will contribute to the Centre for Augmented Reasoning’s objective to build world-class research capability in machine learning while demonstrating the potential and impact of this knowledge for industries in Australia.**

**To be successful you will need**:
1. A PhD in computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent industry experience

2. Programming experience and expertise in Python and relevant deep learning libraries

3. Experience and demonstrable expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas: natural language language processing, vision-language processing, vision-language models, deep learning, applied robotic vision

4. Track record of publications in top-tier machine learning, computer vision, artificial intelligence and/or robotics conferences and/or journals, commensurate with experience and opportunity

5. Fluency in written and spoken English, with an ability to communicate scientific ideas to an expert audience
