**About the role**:
A vacancy exists in the above unit for a highly motivated Palliative Care Aboriginal Health Worker with appropriate knowledge and skills to join our friendly and supportive team. Our progressive and innovative team offers development opportunities for our staff and a caring environment for the delivery of high quality patient centred care.

The role will serve as a primary conduit between SVHS and local Aboriginal communities and will provide non-clinical services including cultural and medical advocacy and developing and maintaining collaborative partnerships between SVHS and the local Aboriginal community. This role requires hands on day to day contact with palliative patients and engagement with Aboriginal community groups and leaders.

The role will provide community outreach on culturally specific perceptions of death and dying specific to Aboriginal patients, their carers and families and promote cultural awareness of the local community’s cultural beliefs and needs by participating in debriefing and information sharing sessions with other members of the palliative care team including specialist doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

**Selection Criteria**
1. Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy, Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries and St Vincent’s Health Australia
2. Be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (Note - this is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised by section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
3. Certificate III in Aboriginal Primary Health Care and/or Certificate III in Aboriginal Primary Health Care (and/or working towards) and/or Certificate IV in Aboriginal Primary Health Care qualification (and/or working towards), and/or Diploma of Aboriginal Primary Health Care (and/or working towards) or equivalent work experience.
4. Superior understanding of Aboriginal culture and the issues affecting Aboriginal people including their primary health and welfare needs and experience in providing support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
5. High level skills in time management, liaison and negotiation, including the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a high demand environment with competing demands.
6. High level written and verbal communication skills, with experience in providing support and advocacy for Aboriginal patients, families and carers
8. Current NSW Driver’s License and willingness to travel as required
