Purpose of specific work area and position

Community Capability and Volunteerism is responsible for identifying and developing community education programs across all hazards that are consistent with the strategic direction of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) that require implementation on a statewide basis.

Community Engagement provides communities with appropriate opportunities to understand risk, and ways of managing risk, enabling communities to be better prepared in an emergency. The team manages and coordinates statewide community programs such as: Fire Ed; Bushfire Ed; Fight Fire Fascination; Prepare. Act. Survive; Road, Attitudes and Action Planning; SafeHome; SafeSpace; and StormSafe and also supports regions in undertaking community engagement activities, through the regional Community Engagement Officers.

Reporting to the Manager, you will be a key member of the team responsible for assisting with development and delivery of community focused fire safety educational and awareness programs and resources to ensure Queenslanders have clear and easy access to information about QFES services and programs. You will also support the review, maintenance and coordination of fire safety education, policies and programs that support a comprehensive and proactive regional implementation of QFES' community safety goals.

We are seeking Expressions of Interest from Fire and Rescue Service operational staff in conjunction with the current generic Station Officer role description(see additional information below).

- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and provide good organisational and planning skills.

Primary duties

In addition to the generic Station Officer, Fire and Rescue Service role description, the purpose of the Community Education Officer includes but is not limited to:

- Assist with the development and implementation of community education programs, initiatives, campaigns and systems and procedures.
- Coordinate resources and/or delivery of multiple community educations programs, including supporting regions to effectively manage program activities.
- Engage with QFES staff, partner organisations, and other government agencies, to enhance QFES' community education capability and effective program delivery.
- Contribute to the planning, writing and design of public education resource materials, suitable for use in a range of environments, including on-line, electronic and broadcast media.
- Assist with the development of resources which can be distributed to the community to provide information and develop resilience.
- Review and evaluate programs by monitoring outcomes, and identify best practice alternatives within the areas of community education.

Additional information
- Hold the rank of substantive Station Officer, however Senior Firefighters are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants may be required to travel and work within the area of responsibility and may also be required to undertake intrastate and interstate travel.
- This is a day work position, yet may require flexible hours of work to meet functional demands.
- Officers appointed to this position will participate in a personal professional development programme developed in conjunction with their supervisor.
