- The Aboriginal Health Liaison Officer (Maternity) delivers health education, health promotion and clinical programs to the Aboriginal Community through Moort Boodjari Mia (MBM). This position liaises, advocates and negotiates with Aboriginal communities and health professionals within St John of God Healthcare (SJGHC) and other community and hospital environments.
- The Position- Work as part of a team to provide health education, primary health care and health promotion services to the Aboriginal Community.- Follow the midwife’s lead in facilitation of clinical care.- Initiate yarning with women and their families, providing cultural support and advocacy- Communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.- Provide health consultation and education using self-management principles, with a community development focus.- Actively encourages and supports clients, families and communities to engage in activities which maximise health gain.- Collaborate with caregivers to ensure the cultural health and wellbeing needs of Aboriginal families are met.- Undertake activities to develop and maintain professional skills to an advanced level, including health promotion, self-management of perinatal education and appropriate skills.- Encourage community involvement and utilises existing networks and resources in health program development to promote integration of services and community ownership of health care.- Promotes public relations between caregivers / clients and the community and acts as a resource on issues relating to Aboriginal Health including advising on models of care.- Identify Aboriginal Health needs and participate in the development and review of Aboriginal Health programs within a cultural framework.- Provide representation on professional and health working parties and committees as required.- Contribute to the development of policy and procedures in relation to the promotion of health and management of health issues before, during and after pregnancy in Aboriginal health.- Maintain appropriate, legible records and ensure security and confidentiality of client information.- Accurately record, collate and report workload statistics.- Provides program activity and outcome reports, as required.- Manage and organise workload with minimum supervision.- Share and demonstrate knowledge of past and current issues affecting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations.
- Position Requirements
- Applicants must show high-level leadership, communication, interpersonal, problem-solving, and negotiation skills, along with experience in clinical and cultural consultation and education. The role requires the ability to prioritise tasks within service boundaries, a commitment to ongoing professional development, and sound computer literacy, including use of Microsoft Office. A current “C” or “C.A” class driver’s licence and a valid First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011 or willingness to obtain) are essential.
