**The Role**
Based in the Defence Campbell Park Offices, the role of the EL 1 Assistant Director Training Area Sustainability (AD TAS) is to provide national level strategic support, advice and guidance to training area staff, zone environment staff, and a broad range of other internal and external stakeholders on environmental legislation, regulation and policy, and help ensure environmental sustainability requirements are incorporated into the management, use, and development of DOTAM training areas.

Specific duties of the AD TAS are to:

- Assess, evaluate, and help develop input into environmental management controls, procedures, policies, reports and plans to ensure compliance with legislation and policy, and contribute to the ongoing improvement to environmental aspects of training area management. Lead on and co-ordinate DOTAM input into environmental and estate management policy and procedures.
- Negotiate and resolve complex and sensitive issues that impact upon training area management, use, environmental protection, and capability.
- Translate legislation and policy into the framework of environmental management controls for DOTAM training areas, and embed these into training area management and use procedures, such as Standing Orders.
- Lead on and coordinate input into environmental impact assessment and approvals as required for higher risk capability and development activities on DOTAM training areas.
- Provide strong leadership to an APS 6 report and by providing clear and consistent communication, the setting of clear performance standards, delegation of responsibility, managing performance respectfully, and by investing in people.

**About our Team**
The Directorate of Operations and Training Area Management (DOTAM) is an exciting place to work with very broad responsibilities providing opportunities for career progression and travel.

DOTAM’s three main functions are:

- The operation and management of 39 military Training Areas and Ranges across Australia,
- Delivery of Bushfire Mitigation activities across the entire Defence Estate, and
- The coordination of the Security & Estate Group support to major military exercises and facilitation of Defence domestic operations within Australia. This includes the full range of Joint Operations Support Staff (JOSS) services comprising the coordination of Defence Assistance to the Civil Community, Defence Force Aid to the Civil Authority and ceremonial requests.

The Directorate works closely with the Services, aiming to provide quality military exercise areas and facilities to ensure Defence and partnered countries can operate safely on modern and sustainable training areas. The development of these areas ultimately ensures forces can enhance Defence capability and readiness, helping protect our nation.

DOTAM HQ is based at Campbell Park, Canberra and the team works in an integrated (civilian and military) environment. The DOTAM organisation consists of a team of approximately 220 Defence personnel (ADF, APS, Reserve) plus contracted personnel located nationally across five regions.
