**About - Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning**
The Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning is the leading educational and research institution in the Asia-Pacific region addressing the design and realisation of inhabited environments. It actively seeks to extend the linkages between education, research and practice in the built environment, and maintains excellent and extensive relationships with members of the built environment professions, government, professional associations and the wider community.
The Faculty has nearly 200 staff and 3000 students, one third of whom are international. It is responsible for the undergraduate Bachelor of Design degree, and offers majors in architecture, landscape architecture, property, construction, and urban planning. The Faculty’s graduate school, the Melbourne School of Design (MSD), teaches accredited masters courses across the professional disciplines of Architecture, Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, Property, Urban Design and Urban Planning.
**About the Role**
A key Maker Space facility is the Machine Workshop, a space that provides support and training for University staff and students to operate workshop machinery and integrate making into teaching, learning and research. The Machine Workshop includes the Timber Workshop and Metal Workshop. The Timber Workshop has 150 sqm of dedicated making and assembly space with fixed equipment (jointer, thicknesser, table saw, mitre saw, bandsaws, etc.) portable equipment (domino, drills, orbital sanders, etc.) and an array of hand tools. This space caters to making with hardwood & softwood timbers, plywoods, MDF, aluminium, and mixed media. The Metal Workshop has 20 sqm of making and assembly space including welding, grinding, linishing, and metal cutting.
The Machine Workshop is led by the Machine Workshop Coordinator who is assisted by the Lead Technician and Technicians. The Technician, under the guidance of Machine Workshop Coordinator and Lead Technician, will primarily be responsible for overseeing the safe operation machinery and equipment by students and staff as part of the Open Access. The Technician will also contribute to the daily operation of the facility assisting students with fabrication queries, conducting consultations and assisting the Maker Spaces Management Team with the delivery of core services.
Responsibilities include:
- Contributing to an open, inclusive, and welcoming University environment, whilst managing the delivery of Core Services to achieve optimal outcomes for all users of the Maker Spaces.
- Efficiently and effectively operating fabrication equipment and solve complex fabrication problems, ensuring all outcomes are completed on budget, on-time, and to the requisite standard
- Ensuring practice of established OHS and safety protocols. Report to the Machine Workshop Coordinator any issues or changes required to processes and protocols to continually improve safety practices..
- Liaising with the Machine Workshop Coordinator and Lead Technician to implement and maintain a maintenance plan
**About You**
To be successful in this role you will demonstrate self-motivation with the ability to work under general direction as an effective member of a team. You will also bring high level interpersonal/communication skills and a strong customer service focus, with a demonstrated ability to communicate technical information effectively to a range of staff and students.
You will also have:
- A relevant qualification with experience in fabrication, or an equivalent combination of experience and/or education/training.
- Demonstrated interest and experience working with wood working machines and other advanced prototyping output devices.
Special Requirement
- You will be required to maintain current OHS training including First Aid (level 2) certification, OHS Roles & Responsibilities, Hazard Identification and Incident Management amongst others, with training to be provided by the faculty.
- To ensure the University continues to provide a safe environment for everyone, this position requires the incumbent to hold a current and valid Working with Children Check._
