- Be part of a values-driven team committed to inclusion and child safety
About Us:
Founded in 2001, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) is Australia’s largest human rights organisation providing support to people seeking asylum. We are an independent not-for-profit organisation whose programs support and empower people seeking asylum to maximise their own physical, mental and social well being. We champion the rights of people seeking asylum and mobilise a community of compassion to create lasting social and policy change.
We are a values-driven organisation that strives to be part of a change movement that supports people seeking asylum by providing critical services such as assistance with accommodation, food, medical and legal services.
The ASRC movement is proudly supported by a community of committed volunteers and supporters who embrace the organisation’s vision that people seeking asylum can live safely, sustainably, independently and equally.
About the Role: (0.4 FTE, 10months Fixed-Term)
As School Coordinator, you will play a vital role in supporting children and families seeking asylum to access education and thrive in the school system. You’ll develop practical tools and resources for families, train and guide staff and volunteers and embed strong child safety practices across the program. The role also involves building pathways to scholarships and fee-relief options, while ensuring families feel informed, supported and empowered in navigating school processes. This is an opportunity to combine your knowledge of education and community support with a commitment to equity and inclusion.
Key Accountabilities:
- Design and maintain practical guides, checklists and translated resources to help families understand school enrolment, documentation and available supports.
- Promote and uphold the ASRC’s Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy, ensuring all staff and volunteers follow child-safe standards and reporting any risks or concerns.
- Facilitate workshops and information sessions for families, and create internal reference materials that help staff and volunteers provide consistent support.
- Research, consolidate and share information on scholarships, fee-relief programs and education-related referral pathways for children and families.
- Deliver training sessions, briefings, and onboarding for staff and volunteers on school processes, child safety obligations and best practices for engaging families.
- Develop template letters, forms, and processes to streamline family support and improve staff and volunteer efficiency.
About You:
- You are a compassionate and resourceful professional with experience in education, community services, or family support.
- You bring strong knowledge of the school system and a commitment to child safety and wellbeing. Skilled at developing practical tools and resources, you are also confident in facilitating workshops and training sessions for staff, volunteers, or community groups.
- You have excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage families from diverse cultural backgrounds using trauma-informed and culturally sensitive approaches.
- A relevant qualification in Education, Social Work, Community Development, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is required.
- Desirable qualities include lived experience of seeking asylum, bilingual or multilingual skills, and experience working with refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, or other vulnerable communities.
Employee Benefits:
Joining the ASRC means being a part of the largest human rights organisation in Australia, supporting refugees and people seeking asylum. We recognise and appreciate our incredible staff for their contribution, dedication and passion to support and empower people seeking asylum by providing the following conditions above the relevant modern award:
