**Clerk Grade 7/8**(Salary Range: $110,266 - $122,058 plus Superannuation and Leave Loading)
As an Economist or Policy Officer, you’ll join one of two high-impact teams within the Economic Strategy & Productivity Group: the **Productivity Reform team** or the **Competition & Regulatory Policy team**. Both teams play a central role in shaping the future of NSW’s economy through rigorous, evidence-based policy development that informs government decision-making. You’ll tackle some of the most pressing and complex policy challenges facing NSW - from housing and infrastructure to education and regulation. You’ll be encouraged to think critically and creatively about how to improve economic outcomes and public value, using robust evidence and persuasive analysis to drive meaningful reform.
Across both teams, you’ll be exposed to a wide range of policy areas and analytical challenges. Recent and ongoing projects include:
- **National Competition Policy Reform**: Collaborating with other jurisdictions to advance a decade-long reform program aimed at boosting competition, improving consumer choice and lowering prices across Australia
- **Housing Supply and affordability**: Contributing to landmark reports such as the _Review of Housing Supply Challenges and Policy Options for New South Wales_, and _Building More Homes Where People Want to Live_ research series.
- **Smarter regulation**: Encouraging continuous improvement approach to regulation to improve outcomes (_Smarter Regulation Through Experiments_) and seizing opportunities from new technologies (_Regulating Emerging Technologies_).
- **Achieving Net Zero**: Supporting NSW’s transition to a low-emissions economy through the _Achieving Net Zero_ research series, which outlines cost-effective, productivity-enhancing pathways to meet the state’s climate targets.
Your work will involve:
- engaging with a wide range of policy areas and stakeholders
- conducting high-quality economic analysis and policy evaluation
- communicating your findings clearly and persuasively to senior decision-makers.

**Achieve success as an Economist/Policy Officer**
In this integral role there are a few things we would like for you to have to best support yourself and add value to the people of NSW.
You will be successful in this role if you have:
- knowledge of and/or professional experience in economics, econometrics, statistics, public policy, law, or another relevant field
- professional experience developing and communicating advice and analysis on micro-economic reform, competition policy, regulatory policy, cost-benefit analysis or developing policy frameworks
- experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Stata, Python) is highly regarded but not essential; depending on the role, you should be open to developing proficiency in R
- relevant tertiary qualifications are highly regarded but not essential if knowledge / experience can otherwise be demonstrated.
