Treasury is the whole-of-government financial and economic advisor. Treasury’s role is critical to government, providing advice informing a wide range of policy for the delivery of public services and economic development in New South Wales.
**Enrich your career with the NSW Treasury**
NSW Treasury is looking for new and recent graduates wanting to commence a career in public policy economics.
Helping to ensure you make a successful start, you will build on your background to develop and improve your skills and knowledge in core areas, including:
- understanding public sector policy development and implementation practices, processes, and institutional arrangements, including legislative and budgetary processes
- time management when faced with complexity, and uncertainty
- how to build and maintain strong working relationships with mentors, managers and colleagues.
You will join our Economic Strategy and Productivity Group, which includes the NSW Productivity & Equality Commission, working within either the Centre for Economic Evidence, Markets & Regulation Division, Macroeconomy Division or Revenue Division. Read more about your future Group and Division.
The Associate Economist role is structured within a twelve month development program, The program comprises placements to teams within the ESP Group, dedicated training sessions with your cohort, and other professional development opportunities. You will be exposed to a broad range of work content and issues. Working with multiple internal and external stakeholders will develop your network and help you to understand your career options in public policy. The specialised knowledge, skills and experience you gain will give you a competitive edge to progress into other roles at the end of the program.
Within your placements you will contribute to the development of economic advice and analysis, informing policy development, implementation, and government decision making. This includes research and analysis, contributing to the assessment of economic impacts, and the evaluation of policy proposals, across a range of state government public policy contexts.

**Achieve success as an Associate Economist**
The Associate Economist role requires:
- relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience in economics, public policy, or a related field
- the flexibility and adaptability to respond quickly when situations change
- undertaking research and analysing information to make recommendations based on relevant evidence
- writing that is well structured and easy to follow
- basic knowledge of public economics (desirable)
