National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is currently seeking an Aboriginal Identified Field Officer to join their team for on-the-ground management of our reserves and wildlife. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the maintenance and preservation of the natural and cultural values of the national park estate.
**About the Role**
Field Officers maintain a wide variety of conservation reserves from remote, mountainous areas through to coastal wetland lake systems. The successful applicant will develop skills and experience in fire mitigation, natural heritage, pest, and cultural heritage including Aboriginal and historic heritage conservation
The Greater Sydney Branch manages 20 nature reserves, 16 national parks, 8 state conservation areas, 3 historic sites and 9 regional parks. This includes Royal National Park, renowned as the second oldest national park in the world, and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, the second oldest national park in Australia.
We work closely with First Nations people to care for diverse landscapes, from dramatic Eucalypt forests in the East to Cumberland Plain Woodland in the West. Our parks host more than 19 million visits each year and we are delivering an ambitious program to improve visitor infrastructure in our key precincts, many of which are State Heritage-listed.
**Role Responsibilities**
- Undertakes bushfire fuel reduction activities, by both mechanical means and prescribed fire.
- Undertakes construction, maintenance and improvements to park assets within NPWS parks and reserves, maintains heritage buildings and structures.
- Undertakes pest, weed and fire management activities including those in remote areas.
- Operates and maintains plant and equipment.
- Responds to visitor enquiries and may undertake compliance activities.
- Contributes to the enhancement and preservation of the natural and cultural heritage values of parks.
**Essential Requirements**:
- Applicants must be of Aboriginal descent through parentage, identification as being Aboriginal and accepted in the community as such. Aboriginality is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under Section 14(d) of the Antidiscrimination Act 1997.
- Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal people, government organisations and communities with the ability to communicate across cultures.
- Knowledge, respect and understanding of Aboriginal cultural issues.
- Current Drivers licence and ability to drive 4wd vehicles, and applicants must obtain MR licence and ability to operate 4wd vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes/15 tonne GVM within the probationary period (up to 12 months).
- Demonstrated ability and experience to carry out all duties safely and ability to obtain relevant SafeWork NSW certification to appropriately operate and maintain a range of plant and equipment, including but not limited to conditionally registered vehicles, watercraft, lifting apparatus and minor road maintenance plant as well as the ability and willingness to obtain a First Aid certificate.
- Certification, or ability to obtain certification within the probationary period (up to 12 months), in operating a chainsaw to crosscut or basic tree felling standard; ability to operate two-way radio.
Ability to carry out frontline firefighting duties and support roles including, ability to obtain and maintain certification as crew member within the probationary period (up to 12 months), and a willingness to fly in light aircraft.
**Please note**:This is a physically demanding role, requiring physical activity, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling loads, bending, climbing, and driving a variety of vehicles. Field Officer applicants must meet the requirements of a firefighting medical which is inclusive of a clearance to undertake frontline firefighting roles. The applicant must pass the task-based fitness assessment to a moderate level within the probationary period (up to 12 months) and annually thereafter_._
