About Us
The Freedom of Information (FOI) team is part of the Corporate Governance and Support business unit in the Department of Justice and Community Safety. We are seeking an experienced FOI practitioner to lead a high functioning team of FOI officers in the delivery of quality FOI decision making in compliance with the statutory requirements of the Freedom of Information Act 1982. You will have demonstrated experience in exercising good judgement and setting priorities to manage legislative and operational requirements while working in a fast paced and high pressured work environment. Your initiative and pro-active 'can do' approach together with your strong stakeholder management skills will be highly regarded in this role.
About the Role
The FOI Team Leader is a leadership role within the FOI Unit and provides management support for FOI Officers in responding to FOI requests. The Team Leader is responsible for ensuring FOI requests are completed within statutory timeframes and that the department provides consistent and high-quality FOI decisions and advice in accordance with the FOI Act.
Key responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
- Manage, process and make decisions on significant and complex requests made to the department under the Freedom of Information Act 1982.
- Assist the Manager, FOI Requests with the effective management of the FOI Unit and provide leadership to the FOI Team by leading and supporting individuals to achieve their potential while maximising their contribution to achieve their goals and outcomes, and modelling behaviours integral to good people management and departmental values.
- Provide authoritative and specialist advice and briefings to Ministers' offices, the Secretary, and other departmental staff on complex FOI matters, in consultation with the Manager, FOI Requests.
- Initiate and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders at peer and senior levels.
- Ensure the respective FOI team and the broader department is meeting its statutory obligations in accordance with the objectives and spirit of the Act.
About You
- A degree in Administrative Law would be highly regarded.
