Canterbury Hospital offers four (5) anaesthetic medical officer positions accredited with ANZCA for 12 months of independent training. There are no external rotations. Emphasis is on providing a broad range of clinical experience, including obstetric and paediatric anaesthesia, under the supervision of an enthusiastic staff of anaesthetic consultants. Service responsibilities include participation on the hospital MET team, the acute pain service, pre-anaesthetic clinics and overnight medical officer cover of the HDU. In addition to clinical teaching, the Department provides a weekly tutorial session, and actively encourages attendance at external courses. The position may be suitable for Intensive Care trainees seeking 12 months
anaesthetics experience.

**Where you'll be working**
Canterbury Hospital is part of the Sydney Local Health District (SLHD), which services approximately 1.42 million people (20% of the NSW population). Local government areas covered by the hospital include Canterbury, Ashfield, Burwood and Strathfield and parts of Marrickville. SLHD is the most ethnically diverse area health service in Australia, with 39% of the population speaking a language other than English. Canterbury Hospital caters for a local population of 220,000 people, of which 66% come from non
- English speaking backgrounds. The main language groups of the local communities are Greek, Italian, Arabic, Vietnamese and Chinese. The hospital is a 215 bed metropolitan acute general hospital, providing services in general medicine and surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, aged care and rehabilitation. There are over 42,000 Emergency Department attendances annually.

**What you'll be doing**

The primary purpose of a Basic Trainee in Anaesthesia is to provide anaesthesia services, under supervision, as part of the basic training program of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Basic Trainees are required to extend their clinical assessment knowledge and skills to manage anaesthesia for common medical conditions of moderate complexity and optimise outcomes for patients through appropriate consultation and supervision. Basic Trainees will participate as a multidisciplinary team member across key areas of anaesthetics, including:

- anaesthesia and sedation
- regional anaesthesia
- airway management
- pain medicine
- perioperative medicine
- resuscitation
- trauma and crisis management
