Research Assistant

PRIMARY DETAIL

Research Assistant is needed in Department of Biomedical Sciences to work with research staff and clinical trial participants to complete clinical research study activities on dementia risk reduction.
- Salary Package: From $76,654 to $82,617 p.a. (HEW Level 4) plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
- Appointment Type: Full-time fixed term position until 31 December 2025 with potential of continuation
- Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde).

The Role

Macquarie University is seeking a Research Assistant to join a team working on a clinical trial with the aim of slowing or preventing cognitive decline and dementia conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, in a population of people considered at high risk of cognitive decline.

Under supervision from the principal researcher, the key responsibilities include:
- Assist in the follow up of enrolled study participants, throughout the course of the investigator-initiated AU-ARROW study for dementia risk reduction- Complete data entry into study related logs, study spreadsheets, online case-report forms and paper-based documents, while maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity towards participant data.- Prepare study material, equipment, consumables and set up of relevant systems in accordance with approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).- On occasions, help with participant group meetings, setting up slides or zoom meetings, and taking blood pressure of participants.- Answer participant queries, including simple phone, Fitbit and computer technical queries- Comply with University research and ethics protocols and legislative requirements related to data collection and storage.- Calling participants to obtain adverse event details, then filling adverse event forms for clinician review- Help the clinical trial coordinator and other AU-ARROW staff to prepare required documents for participant clinic visits.- Potentially taking blood samples, and completing blood processing for storage, following training- Assist with the preparation of research data for presentation and publication.- Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations.

You are an enthusiastic, adaptable and competent individual.You are able to show initiative and anticipate requirements, ensuring that deadlines and objectives are met. You will have outstanding written and verbal communication skills and pay attention to detail. While previous clinical trial experience is not essential, familiarity with research and laboratory work is an advantage.

- Essential Criteria:_- Degree or equivalent certificate in biological sciences, nutrition/dietetics, nursing or related discipline_- Computer skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and web-based research_- Research experience with an understanding of clinical research, as well as laboratory health and safety practices and principles_- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills_- Good organisational skills and IT competency to be able to answer occasional technology-related questions from participants._- Knowledge of ICH-GCP guidelines or willing to complete training (2-4 hour course)_- Learn data entry procedures, including through REDCap and SharePoint data management systems, as relevant to the study_
- Desirable Criteria:_- Some laboratory-based research experience preferred, especially with regard to aseptic techniques_- Previous experience with older people, for example as trial study participants, or patients, or clients in retail settings_- Handling confidential participant information and informed consent process_- Willing to learn human blood processing techniques (aseptic)_- Blood collection experience desirable_
