The Neuroproteomics research group within the Centre for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at Macquarie University (Sydney) is looking for a Research Assistant.

THE ROLE- Salary Package: from $76,908 -$87,443 per annum (HEW level 5) plus 17% employer’s superannuation contribution and annual leave loading- Appointment Type: Full time, fixed term (1 year)- Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

The purpose of this research assistant position is to conduct technical research tasks and activities for the Neuroproteomics research group within the Centre for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research group. The research assistant will lead and work independently to identify and develop improvements to existing proteomic techniques and participate in group analysis work and hold oversight of laboratory activities.

Key Accountabilities- Undertake research techniques to process samples for the MND research team examining the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurodegeneration in motor neuron disease (MND) and comply with research protocols.- Undertake a variety of molecular, cellular biology and protein chemistry research techniques and related duties including Western blotting, immunocytochemistry, immunohistochemistry, and confocal microscopy.- Under the direction of the principal researcher, undertake cell culture techniques, preferably including cell culture, transfections, and viral transductions.- Record results and collate information for researchers for analysis- Supervise and train students in the use of research laboratory equipment to ensure completion of their research projects- Manage the efficient day-to-day operation of the laboratory including retaining up-to-date SOPs, biosafety documentation, ordering, equipment maintenance, and budget and account keeping for all staff and students- Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations- Manage the performance and perform preventative maintenance and upkeep of sophisticated mass spectrometry equipment- Induction of staff and students in the PC2 cell culture and proteomics lab areas to ensure Biosafety accreditation is maintained- Independently run multiple projects simultaneously to ensure outcomes are met for funding bodies and progress reports- Responsible for stocktaking and ordering of laboratory consumables across the MND research centre (>80 staff and students)Insert- Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations- Perform any other duties as required and appropriate for this classification

About You

The role necessitates a high level of teamwork proficiency in effectively undertaking and completing research projects within the team and collaborative environments. The research assistant is expected to possess exceptional organisational skills, demonstrably capable of meeting tight deadlines and managing time with great efficacy.

Furthermore, the successful applicant must bring to the table experience in working within a PC2 laboratory, with a proven track record in molecular and cell biology as well as proteomics.
