Exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Research Assistant with an interest in Neuroscience to work on a project focusing on the development of novel gene therapies for the treatment of epilepsy

THE ROLE- Salary Package: From $80,753 - $91,815 (HEW 5) plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loading- Appointment Type: Fixed Term Contract (12m with potential extension)- Location: Macquarie University (Wallumattagal Campus, North Ryde)

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic Research Assistant with an interest in neuroscience and neurological disorders to contribute to a NHMRC-funded project aiming to develop novel gene therapies for the treatment of epilepsy. The researcher will also assist with ongoing projects investigating the mechanisms underlying neurological disorders, such as dementia. The successful applicant will provide experimental and resource support on a wide range of research activities, including behavioural and biochemical analysis of mice, cell culture and analysis, molecular biology and cloning, testing and analysis of AAV gene therapies. The Research Assistant will work directly with Senior Academics at the Dementia Research Centre and will liaise with a range of research and administrative staff. This should appeal to a highly motivated individual who is keen to contribute exceptional efforts to a research team in neuroscience and treatment development.

Specific role requirements:
- Carry out, and assist with, biochemical analysis of biological resources (including cell culture and animal tissue) using a variety of research techniques such as Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, PCR, protein extraction etc.- Undertake molecular biology experiments such as: RT-PCR, DNA/RNA extractions, molecular cloning and modification of DNA plasmids.- Culturing, treating and analysis of cultured cells, both immortalized cell lines and primary cells, with techniques including immunocytochemical staining, western blot etc.- Assist with the maintenance and monitoring of a large mouse colony to a high standard. This includes assisting with setting up of breedings, monitoring pregnancies, weaning offspring, tissue harvesting, record keeping and genotyping of mice.- Assist with, and carry out, behavioural testing of mice including adequate monitoring of mice throughout the testing period and analysis of behavioural data.- Work efficiently and effectively as part of a team to help support senior researchers, as well as working independently, to complete research projects to a high scientific standard.- Maintain appropriately detailed and accurate records of experiments and proficient management of data.- Comply with relevant EEO and WHS regulations.

About You

The successful applicant will have a proven record of excellent standard of laboratory research, data analysis, record keeping and communication skills. You can work with minimum supervision, show initiative, and anticipate requirements, ensuring deadlines and objectives are met. Previous experience in the behavioural and biochemical analysis of mice, including immunocytochemistry and animal handling, is highly desirable. You will bring to the role knowledge of various laboratory techniques, including protein biochemistry, molecular biology, histology, cell culture and/or microscopy. You can use strong written and verbal communication and organisational skills to liaise with various stakeholders and assist in the preparation of research data for presentation and publication.
