**Position Information**:
Shortland Public School, situated on Awabakal land, is a forward thinking school situated in the Newcastle area, close to the Newcastle University and wetlands of Shortland. Our school comprises of 10 mainstream classes and 7 Inclusive Education classes. Approximately 35% of students are from Aboriginal backgrounds and 17% of students from a language background other than English. Shortland Public School has a strong sense of belonging and community involvement with an active Parent and Citizens' Association and active member of Callaghan Education Pathways and Callaghan AECG, working collaboratively with our communities to achieve maximum outcomes for all our students.

Our 7 Inclusive Education classes are a cohesive unit supported by a Deputy Principal and Assistant Principal. Staffing is made up of experienced and beginning educators and support officers who focus on wholistic experiences for all students. Our inclusive education team is made up of 2 multi-categorical, 2 autism and 3 emotional disturbance classes, with all ages K-6.

Our school programs support the diverse learning needs of our students, with individual needs catered for with continued monitoring of student performance. Shortland Public School is an inclusive school which nurtures the social success of each individual by maintaining a positive and caring learning environment.

**Selection Criteria**:
In addition to the general selection criteria,

Approval to teach K-6 special education and/or extensive experience teaching students K-6 with disabilities, to build a high expectations culture of inspiration, participation and success demonstrating experience within a range of inclusive education settings.

High level management skills to balance classroom teaching, team leadership and complex administration to successfully manage specialist support classes with a genuine culture of inclusion and integration.

Proven ability to lead evidence-based and evaluative practices to deliver high quality differentiated and individualised curriculum-based practice with a focus on continuous improvement.

Evidence of a highly visible approachable and collaborative leader with a capacity to develop, implement and maintain inclusive and trusting relationships with the school leadership team, students, families, staff, and the wider community.

**General Selection Criteria**:
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policy
