The Garvan Research Foundation was founded in 1981 and is the fundraising and marketing arm of the Institute, raising awareness and vital funds from individuals, trusts and foundations and corporate and community groups.
The Foundation’s income has grown from a fundraising base of $110,000 in its first year to more than $48 million in 2021 - approximately half of the Institute’s total income. The remarkable success of the Foundation’s activities is having a catalytic impact on our researchers’ ability to make scientific contributions that will ultimately lead to earlier diagnosis, better treatments and prevention or cure of a range of diseases.
The Opportunity
The Communications Coordinator will work to raise the awareness of the Garvan Institute’s scientific excellence. Core responsibility of this role is to liaise with researchers and the media to drive awareness of Garvan’s scientific excellence.
This role reports to the Communications Lead in the Science Communications team. A good communicator who is passionate about science will enjoy this role.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibilities include:
- Working with Garvan’s research laboratories, groups and individuals to identify opportunities for stories to promote Garvan’s research that will resonate and engage when converted to lay language
- Writing articles and creating content to communicate Garvan’s research developments to the community
- Assisting in developing relationships with external news outlets and journalists
- Assisting with pitching stories from Garvan to the media
- Assisting with reporting on media coverage
- Creating or repurposing existing content into written collateral including the Garvan news page, annual report and Breakthrough newsletters
- Developing support collateral and assets for communications initiatives
- Assisting with the development of videos and other content as required

- This is a permanent full-time role with a salary of up to $78,000 + 10.5% super + salary packaging

About You
The key skills and experience include:
- Tertiary qualifications in marketing, communication or journalism fields, or equivalent experience
- Strong writing skills and experience in producing a range of material for various external audiences with a preference for writing and pitching for media
- Able to effectively communicate equally with co-workers, members of the public, media, management and Board members, donors and other stakeholders
- High level of accuracy and eye for detail and able meet strict deadlines
- Able to manage own time to achieve all outcomes, the ability to prioritise and organise a busy workload
- Experience or interest in medical science highly advantageous
- Working knowledge of scientific research and culture, with a track record in effectively communicating complex science to a lay audience is highly desirable
- Self-motivated uses initiative
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team
