The National Health and Medical Research Council's (NHMRC) Digital Communications, Media and Parliamentary section strives to inform and educate stakeholders, employing a multi-channel approach and using a mix of written and visual content, to communicate to audiences including government, the general public and the research sector.

The small media team manages media enquiries, promotes NHMRC activities through the media, develops online content to promote through social media platforms and communicates important information to the research sector on grant process and timelines.

The Social Media and Communications Manager supports both internal and external communications activities by developing and implementing communication strategies, undertaking communication projects and tasks and providing communication advice and assistance to NHMRC executive, Committees and broader leadership team. A key focus is the management of media enquiries, development of content for our social media channels and broader communication channels.

Major functions of the position include:

- Providing guidance and advice to senior staff across the NHMRC, relevant portfolio Minister and media advisers, on NHMRC-related news, including contentious issues in the media.
- Management of media inquiries and provide timely advice on responses, alternative approaches and strategies.
- Development of productive, collaborative relationships with NHMRC’s Executive team and staff as well as a wide range of external stakeholders to manage NHMRC’s external presence consistent with the communications strategy and content pipeline that the position manages.
- Identify and secure media opportunities to promote NHMRC, aiming for balanced coverage by building strategic relationships with key journalists and organisations receiving NHMRC grants. Engagement with the CEO and other senior staff may be needed when developing these opportunities.
- Working independently with other staff and stakeholders to research, write and edit content on NHMRC’s website and a broad range of other external communication methods including social media, speeches, presentations, print publications, media releases and briefing papers.

**Job Specific Duties**
As the Social Media and Communications Manager, you will manage the delivery of NHMRC’s communications through:

- Development and management of NHMRC’s content strategy and quarterly content pipeline plans.
- Manage a small team to achieve the aims and objectives of the content strategy.
- Oversee daily media monitoring and monitoring social media channels.
- Initiate, write and proof online content for promotion through NHMRC’s social media and other digital communication channels.
- Provide advice on draft responses to media inquiries in consultation with line areas and NHMRC’s Executive team.
- Manage grant announcements and award announcements, including liaising with the research sector and Minister’s office.
- Provide advice on communications, including treatment of media releases and communications to the health and medical research sector.
- Maintain and cultivate key contacts in communication networks and stakeholder groups.

This position participates in a team roster for weekday media monitoring. This work commences on rostered weeks at 7:00 am.
