Powering Australian Life.
At AGL, we believe energy makes life better. That’s why we’re passionate about powering the way Australians live, work and move.
Like you, we believe that the world is going through extraordinary challenges. We don’t shy away from the tough questions and we consider the answers carefully. We work in partnership with our customers and communities, and take action to shape a better future for all.
As life changes, we join the change, constantly evolving over 185 years. Today we bring all that know-how to transform how Australians produce, share and consume energy. We’re investing in new ideas, partnerships and infrastructure - renewing and expanding our portfolio of sources and products to help make them more sustainable, reliable, affordable and useful.
We’ll continue to innovate in energy and other essential services to enhance the way Australians live, and to help preserve the world around us for future generations.
About the Role
- Excellent benefits, leave policies, recognition, and discounted energy
- Full Time or Part Time Permanent | Flexible opportunity
- Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide offering hybrid work
A permanent position has become available as part of the Policy & Regulation team at AGL. As the Policy Manager, you will play a key role in researching and examining policy issues across the energy sector, and working with staff across AGL’s business to respond to these issues and develop positive policy outcomes for the energy industry and AGL. You will also be instrumental in developing policy proposals and advocacy that support AGL’s ambition to connect its customers to a sustainable future, and responsibly transition our generation portfolio. Areas of focus are broad, and include climate and environmental policy, wholesale electricity and gas market reforms, carbon market policy, retail market policy, and policy relating to distributed energy resources and new generation technologies.
You will be part of a small team that is required to actively monitor the external policy environment to anticipate emerging issues and trends across the energy sector, work closely with a diverse range of business units within AGL to understand potential business impacts, and broker internal consensus on AGL’s advocacy approach and policy positioning.
What you’ll be doing:
Reporting to the Senior Manager Policy, you will:
- Build and maintain a broad understanding of existing and emerging policy issues and test their impact on the achievement of AGL’s strategic objectives
- Respond to industry issues through the development of innovative ideas and policy approaches that align with AGL’s strategic objectives, support the energy transition, and drive positive outcomes for energy customers
- Engage with broader AGL business units to ensure the implications of policy proposals are well understood and impacts are able to be quantified
- Ensure internal analysis is augmented with well-evidenced research and analysis using external sources, as well as with an understanding of relevant external stakeholder perspectives
- Prepare clear and concise internal briefing notes and presentations on policy developments and their strategic relevance to AGL
- Support effective public policy advocacy through the preparation of clear and persuasive written submissions, and collaboration with other Corporate Affairs and Company Secretariat functions (e.g. government, media, communications, and regulatory strategy)
- Support effective team functioning through the maintenance of key internal policy planning and governance documents to promote adherence to robust internal policy development processes
About You
What you’ll bring to the table:
- Demonstrated public policy or regulatory experience in the energy sector (or other heavily regulated industry) or demonstrated experience with climate policy
- Strong analytical and strategic thinking ability, capable of grasping issues quickly and reducing complex problems to key concepts
- Quality written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to tailor messages to different audiences
- Attention to detail and the ability to present information clearly, accurately, and persuasively
- Demonstrated ability to build relationships, nurture and expand professional networks, and work collaboratively across a large organisation
- Excellent planning and prioritisation skills
- Ability to work within a fast-paced, contested, and continually evolving external environment
- Relevant tertiary qualification in policy, economics, law, business, engineering, or similar
Please note - unsolicited resumes from agencies will not be accepted by AGL.
