**About the role**
The Assistant Director Media leads a small team to deliver high-quality media services to the agency. This role supports the Director Communication and Media and the ACIC executive to deliver strategic media advice and support. This role is responsible for engaging with and monitoring media, supporting the media activities of our minister, advising the executive of emerging reputational issues and actively pursuing opportunities for positive exposure.
Key responsibilities:
- Manage the ACIC’s media engagement including reputation and issues management, media enquiries, interview requests and media events. This includes conducting spokespeople briefings, media training and coaching.
- Develop and implement proactive media strategies and identify opportunities to promote and position the ACIC. This includes identifying and building constructive relationships with key media outlets and journalists.
- Guide and mentor team members to deliver high quality media activities, strategic advice and support.
- Monitor and analyse emerging media issues and provide out-of-hours support (including participation in and management of on-call roster) as required.
- Establish and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external stakeholder representatives.
- As part of the Communication and Media Section’s leadership team work collaboratively with peers on broader activities within the section and across the Governance and Communication Branch.
- Coordinate procurement, budget, and administrative matters related to the Media Team.
To be successful in this role, you will demonstrate the following experience, skills and attributes:
- You have demonstrated experience and proven ability in a strategic media role, with a strong news sense and understanding of the contemporary media landscape.
- You are a mentor who coaches staff, sharing your media expertise and modelling positive leadership.
- You are a highly capable and experienced communicator with strong writing, editing, proofreading, and presentation skills.
- Your strong interpersonal skills give you the ability to foster relationships with journalists and editors across a range of media.
- You work collaboratively both within your team and also across the organisation with staff at all levels, including liaison with the minister’s office.
- You have excellent organisational and prioritisation skills with the ability to lead and motivate a small team to achieve results within timeframes and quality requirements.
- You are comfortable in a high-tempo environment and are able to work with limited direction, using a positive and proactive approach to problem-solving.
**Essential qualifications**
- Tertiary qualifications in communications, public relations, marketing, or journalism or equivalent professional experience (5+ years).
- Ability to participate in media relations as part of section after-hours on-call roster including media liaison role.
**Desirable qualifications**
- Qualifications in journalism or media studies or direct experience working as a journalist.

- **Citizenship**- To be eligible for employment with the ACIC, applicants must be an Australian citizen.
- ** Security Clearance** - The Australian community expects ACIC employees to maintain the highest levels of security and integrity. Successful applicants will be required to obtain and maintain a minimum Negative Vetting 1 security clearance.
