What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of AFP Museum Curator.

The Australian Federal Police Museum collects, preserves and exhibits objects, images and information related to the history of the AFP and its predecessors. In line with the AFP Museum’s strategic direction, the Curator will focus on initiating, planning, developing, implementing and evaluating relevant, engaging and inspiring public and curatorial programs that connect the museum with its target audiences. These may include exhibitions, digital and other media content, research and educational material.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

**As the AFP Curator you will**:
Assist the Team Leader AFP Museum with the development and delivery of a curatorial narrative, short
- and long-term plans and governance for the museum including the development of policies related to the use of its collection.
Develop imaginative and distinctive permanent and temporary exhibitions and other curatorial programs that supports the museum’s mission, vision and forward plan.
Develop the AFP Collection to reflect current and historic areas of interest.
Support other areas of the AFP where the Museum collection and expertise are requested.
Contribute to internal and external media and social media needs including the AFP’s internal publications.
Oversee and use the Museum’s research collection.
Following best practice museum principles, engage with museum donors, stakeholders, staff in other collecting organisations and police to assess curatorial opportunities and develop a significant and well-documented collection.
Keep abreast of contemporary developments in curatorial scholarship and practice, establish and maintain peer networks within the industry; and develop and support effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Requirements

You must be an Australian Citizen.
A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
Demonstrated ability to work in a productive team environment.
Applied knowledge of professional and contemporary museum principles, practices and procedures including an understanding of the process of developing exhibitions and developing a significant collection. Fluency with using collection management databases.
Knowledge of Australian history and the issues affecting Australian society. An interest in historic and contemporary policing would be desirable.
Demonstrated ability to analyse and conceptualise problems, formulate and execute appropriate creative solutions and negotiate successful outcomes in an innovative and sensitive manner.
Exemplary research skills. Outstanding oral communication skills and an ability to write and edit authoritative and accessible text.
Knowledge of project management principles and proven experience in delivering curatorial projects that meet the agreed quality, timescale, strategic and budget objectives.
A commitment to the issues of equality, diversity and inclusion.
Desirable Requirements

The following skills and/or experience would be highly regarded:
High level tertiary qualifications in museum studies, cultural heritage management and/or history.
At least five years’ curatorial experience with a cultural collecting institution, preferably in a collection development and/or exhibition development role.
