The City of Port Phillip is an inner-city council with around 1000 employees who deliver more than 100 programs and services to our residents, businesses and visitors. These range from childcare and immunisations, to libraries, management of parks and open space, rubbish collection, road maintenance and more.

South Melbourne Market has been a treasured inner-city landmark and a favourite amongst locals and visitors since 1867. It is the quintessential village market, a place where people come not only to purchase fresh food, but to meet, eat, drink, shop, discover, share and connect. The Market is owned and operated by City of Port Phillip.

**About the Role**

An exciting and rare opportunity exists to drive and build the planning, curation, and implementation of retail at the South Melbourne Market, contributing to the culture and overall customer experience excellence the South Melbourne Market is renowned for.

You will manage the pipeline of potential retailers and innovative customer experiences; undertake strategic precinct planning and customer journey mapping; and enhance retail placemaking including coordination of the Expression of Interest (EOI) process to fill vacancies in permanent stalls and short-term stalls in line with the Market Mix. Curate the SO:ME Space and other casual tenancies, and work with existing and new traders on the stall design process including management of the overall design and fit-out guidelines.

Reporting to the Head of Retail & Business Development you will build on the existing offer to ensure the South Melbourne Market remains a popular, unique, and exciting destination now and into the future.

**Duties**:

- Develop the Market’s retail offer & vibrancy
- Drive the Markets curation, innovation, and best practice in retail
- Build a pipeline of potential new operators/ businesses
- Oversee and drive improvements in retailing, stall fit-outs, and visual merchandising
- Drive the Market’s customer experience through planning and Market Mix
- Develop trader relationships and external partnerships
- Coordinate the pop-ups and casual tenancies management, curation & delivery
- Assist in the development and implementation of the Market’s Strategic Plan

**Skills and Experience**
- Strong strategic retail background.
- At least 5 years’ experience dealing with small business in a market/shopping centre including: hospitality, retail, food and specialist goods and services.
- High level visual merchandising/ retail design experience.
- Rental contracts and budgetary experience.
- Exceptional communication skills in a customer service setting.
- High attention to detail.
- Tertiary qualification in business, retail management, and/or visual merchandising/ retail design.
