About us
The Youth Justice Team provides community-based supervision and a range of case management and support services for young people who are appearing before, or have been sentenced by, the Children's Court, Children's Koori Court, and adult criminal courts and who have been placed on youth justice supervised orders. The team promotes the personal development of young offenders and contributes to the reduction of crime in the community.
The Youth Justice team forms part of the Youth Justice Division of the Department of Justice and Community Safety, acknowledging the over representation of Aboriginal young people in the criminal justice system and the need to provide a culturally based approach with a commitment to diversion, rehabilitation and re-integration into the community.
What you will do
You will also help to increase Aboriginal young people's opportunities of enhanced quality of life and community inclusion. This includes adopting a Care Team approach, assessments, implementing and reviewing case plans and goal-setting, monitoring progress, advocacy and referrals. Above all, this role will ensure Aboriginal young people's needs are met in a way that is responsive, relevant and cultural safe.

**To be successful in this role you will possess**:

- A demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with members of the Victorian Aboriginal Youth community.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the Victorian Aboriginal youth Community, both society and culture and current issues self-determination and the issues
- An understanding of the youth justice system, and the issues driving Aboriginal over-representation of Aboriginal young people as well as the principles and philosophy underpinning relevant legislation and the Victorian Youth Justice program.
- An understanding of the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005 and associated policies and guidelines developed for use by youth justice workers.
- An understanding of the principles of case management and case work and being able to utilise a range of assessment and interventions relevant to the age, gender, developmental stage, and cultural background and offending related needs of the young person.

Upon commencement of employment with the department you will be required to provide evidence that you have an up-to-date vaccination status within the timelines specified by the department into the DJCS Service Portal. This includes evidence of three doses of a COVID-19 vaccine required by the department (from time to time).
