**About our opportunity**:
**_ Our Emergency Management Department_** aims to build a safer and more resilient community. The key actions to achieve this include partnering with stakeholders to develop arrangements to prevent, prepare, respond, and recover from emergencies and disasters. Other core functions include the enhancement of public safety through reducing the risk of fire on council land, proactive community engagement and the management of close circuit television systems to support business operations, crime prevention and investigation.

**_ The Department comprises three teams to manage these initiatives, these being Disaster Management, Fire Management, and Public Safety._**

This position will lead the delivery of Council’s fire management function, working in conjunction with Council’s management team and external partners. Specifically, the focus is designing, developing, implementing, communicating, and evolving fire management programs that shape and shift council’s approach to build safer and more resilient communities.

As the Principal Fire Management Officer, you will lead, develop, and implement highly complex fire management plans and operational activities to ensure bushfire risks are managed for Council bushland and open spaces including fire trail networks, vegetation modification, planned burns including high complexity burns and bushfire responses, utilising the Australasian Inter-service Incident Management System (AIIMS), including undertaking the role of incident controller as required

You will also directly support our community by fulfilling duties in Council’s Local Disaster Coordination Centre, be On Call, and scheduled overtime arrangements as required.

**About you**

We are looking for individuals who are humble enough to know the limits of their knowledge, remain open to other’s perspectives, but strong enough to be decisive and calm in chaos. Someone that is community focused and can lead and effectively motivate and communicate outcomes to a range of team members. You will have significant experience in the successful delivery of effective bushland fire management strategy, program, and projects.

Your knowledge and expertise in conservation with an emphasis on fire management, natural area ecology, flora and fauna, legislative interpretation, and conservation operations will be valuable for our communities.

Additionally, you will have:

- Extensive experience in developing, managing, and driving high performing teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure during bushfire and disaster response activations.
- Flexibility and availability of On Call and scheduled overtime arrangement
- Tertiary qualification in environmental science, natural resource management, environmental management or similar.
- Advanced diploma of public safety (firefighting) or equivalent practical experience.
- Complex Planned Burn Supervisor fire qualification or equivalent.
- Current C class driver’s licence
