The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Preparator to join our Content team in this ongoing APS Level 5 position.

The Preparator plays a key role in repairing, fabricating, installing, maintaining and de-mounting exhibitions onsite and offsite following design specifications and knowledge of fabrication techniques and safe practices. It is their duty to liaise with various sections of the Museum on preparation matters, either directly, or through their day-to-day supervisor, including representing the branch on exhibition teams as required.

**Key Accountabilities**
Under limited direction, this position is responsible for delivering the following functions:
**Core Duties**
- Assist in planning and co-ordinating the preparation, fabrication, installation, maintenance and de-mounting of exhibitions, including travelling exhibitions at other sites, based upon design specifications, operational guidelines and safe working practices.
- Create, or work with the day-to-day supervisor and exhibition team lead to create Safe Method Working Statements and risk assessments for each project or part thereof.
- Ensure exhibitions are installed and demounted to budget and the appropriate time schedule.
- Provide quotes and timetables for preparation services, using resources to budget.
- Ensure the Museum are up to date with the latest developments in materials, production and sustainability (financial and environmental) and make recommendations for best practice.
- Ensure that exhibitions are regularly checked for defects, which are rapidly reported and resolved, ensuring a well-maintained visitor experience.
- Play an active role in contributing to exhibition development and delivery to ensure that they are innovative, high quality and engaging so that they will enlighten and inspire the public both onsite, offsite and digitally (including online).
- Effectively adapt to onsite changes to ensure stakeholder goals are reasonably achieved.

**Resourcing and Supervision**
- Reports on day-to-day, leave planning and project matters to the Manager of Production and Lighting. Seeks their support in escalating issues to the Head of Exhibitions and Collections as appropriate.
- Supervise short-term contractors ensuring the site is safe, secure and well managed. Make sure they have been inducted to the site based upon any procedures established by Security of Facilities as appropriate prior to the commencement of work.
- Monitor and report on the progress of projects and ensure that opportunities for continual improvement and internal learning are identified and acted upon.
- Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to meet exhibition schedules.
- Effectively report on the budget and escalate any issues in a timely fashion to the day-to-day supervisor.

**Other**
- Have the ability to operate forklifts and work at elevated platforms if required.
- Ordering and maintaining stock within the Museum’s workshop.
- Ensuring workshop equipment is effectively maintained

**Selection Criteria**
- Experience in supporting exhibition deliverables, installations and de-mounting of exhibitions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Well-developed organisational skills and a demonstrated ability to achieve results within defined timeframes and budget.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practice WHS processes and documentation, including the creation of Risk Assessments and Safe Work Method Statements.

**Qualifications and/or relevant experience required**

**Desirable**
- Forklift License.
- Elevated Work Platform ability.
- Experience in handling and maintaining workshop equipment and tools.
