Our District Emergency Departments see a combined total of nearly 150,000 patients per year. We have access to most specialities within our region, including general, trauma and sub-specialty surgery, general and sub-specialty medicine, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology and mental health.

The ISLHD Emergency Departments are accredited by the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) for ED training with Wollongong Hospital as a major centre for training since 2022.

ISLHD runs a successful Registrar teaching program with a dedicated education team that consistently achieves Fellowship examination success. ISLHD EDs are served by the ISHEC- Simulation centre and provide a Special Skills Term in Simulation Medicine training for ED trainees. It also has an Ultrasound Special Skills Term for ED trainees. Further opportunities for teaching include medical students from the local University of Wollongong Graduate School of Medicine through to the ACEM Emergency Medicine Certificate and Diploma. We also offer simulation, research and service development opportunities via these resources.

Wollongong Hospital, located on Dharawal Country, is the Illawarra Shoalhaven’s major referral and teaching hospital and has a bed-base count of more than 500. The campus, which incorporates the Illawarra Regional Cancer Care Centre, provides a comprehensive range of inpatient, outpatient and community-based services.
