**Your new role**

The Media Adviser plays a key role in supporting the Media Manager and team in delivering an efficient and engaging media service for the Department for Education. The position promotes the department's public image, highlights important education initiatives, and provides high-level media advice to staff, including executives. It also assists schools in managing sensitive issues and promoting positive news.

Key duties include liaising with journalists, ensuring timely and accurate responses, preparing media releases and managing media risks. Operating in a deadline-driven environment, the role requires strategic thinking, adaptability, and exceptional interpersonal skills. On-call support on a rostered basis may be required with time.

The role exists in politically sensitive environment and requires quick thinking, adaptability and the ability to influence outcomes, build relationships and provide accurate information with a risk lens.

**What you'll need to succeed**

To be considered for this role, you will have:

- Proven ability to effectively manage a high and varied workload under pressure in a demanding environment, with strong time management skills to meet tight deadlines and produce high quality work, and operate collaboratively within a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment.
- Well-developed writing and editing experience in preparing media releases, media statements and responses, feature articles, media strategies, media talking points, speeches and engaging social media content.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high level, empathetic advice and support to management, staff and stakeholders on sensitive issues and ideally within a public sector media unit.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team on confidential and sensitive issues, exercising discretion and sound judgement and following stringent internal approval processes.
- Demonstrate knowledge and commitment to promoting and creating a safe and inclusive work environment and the legislative requirements of Equal Opportunity and Work Health and Safety legislation.
- Broad contemporary knowledge of current issues and initiatives related to education is desirable.
- Tertiary qualifications in communications or a relevant discipline.

**Special Conditions**:
The successful applicant is required to gain a Department for Human Services (DHS) working with children check (WWCC) prior to being employed which is required to be renewed every five years before expiry. The incumbent will be required to undertake RRHAN -EC (Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect - Education Care) Facilitator Lead (Masterclass) extended course or the online (Fundamentals) course which will be required to be updated every three years.
