What you will do

**As our Science Technician (Aquatic Weeds), you will**:

- Propagate and culture aquatic plants for experimental work in aquaria and ponds at the Ecosciences Precinct.
- Conduct laboratory and outdoor experiments.
- Work with chemicals, some of them hazardous, while following standing operating procedures and WHS regulations.
- Carry out field work to conduct experiments and collect data in freshwater systems, often with limited direct supervision.
- Measure and monitor the effect of herbicide treatments on aquatic plants.
- Perform research in and around water bodies, including wading in shallow water,snorkelling and using watercraft for data collection.
- Process samples in the laboratory.
- Record, analyse and maintain data.
- Liaise with the project team and external stakeholders to carry out research.
- Assist in the preparation of technical and scientific papers and reports.
- Assist the team in field and lab research as required. This may include working in the field for extended periods of time either as part of a small team or independently.

Essential requirements
- The successful applicant must hold a mandatory Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a relevant field (e.g. freshwater ecology, plant science, agricultural science or environmental science) from a recognised tertiary institution.
- A willingness to work in the field with mínimal supervision, including work in and around water bodies (wading in water, snorkelling, or from watercraft) in wet and slippery conditions, and exposed to variable weather conditions.
- For international qualifications, the applicant will need their qualification assessed, to determine comparability with the Australian Qualifications Framework. The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training can assist with these assessments for Queensland residents.
- A valid 'C' class driver's license.
- A requirement of this position is to work in and around bodies of water. Therefore, you must possess the ability to swim distances and have a reasonable level of fitness.

- Previous experience with aquatic plant research or work in freshwater environments would be highly regarded.
